Diplomat held in Philippines on abuse charge

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Philippine police said Monday they have detained a vacationing Italian diplomat and filed complaints of human trafficking and child abuse after he was allegedly found in the company of three underage boys at a resort.

The diplomat was based in Turkmenistan, said police Senior Superintendent Romulo Sapitula. Members of the child rights group Bahay Tuluyan who were on an outing in the same resort in Laguna province south of Manila became suspicious and alerted authorities, he said.

Catherine Scerri of Bahay Tuluyan said she and her colleagues saw the foreigner at the resort with three young children aged 9 to 12 clearly not related to him.

The Italian Embassy in Manila was aware that Philippine police had taken the man into custody, said an embassy staffer, who refused to give her name. The embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome did not immediately comment either.

According to a police press statement, Italian Ambassador Massimo Roscigno visited the police station in Binan, Laguna, to ensure that legal assistance was provided to the diplomat.

The complaints were filed before a prosecutor, who will determine if there is enough evidence for formal charges to be brought against the diplomat.

Sapitula, the provincial police chief, said their investigation showed that the diplomat took the children to his accommodation in Manila and then to the resort.

According to the police statement, the diplomat told investigators during questioning that the boys "were street children that I had brought from Manila" and that they had informed their parents about the trip.

The statement said that the boys told police that the diplomat brought them to his house where he "personally bathed and scrubbed their naked bodies and afterwards gave them money and food."

The Philippine anti-trafficking law sets a penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of at least 2 million pesos ($44,500) if the victim is a child.

Child abuse carries a prison term of up to 40 years.

hopefully this arrest will be a BETTER deterrent to others who think they can get away w/this behavior.

taking children to a water park? with members of a child rights group in attendance.

at least he is not claiming he is "ill" and needs hospitalization. due to high blood? neck pains? LBM?

bad back? etc etc,,

appears that this man is still in jail . not much news has been reported on him lately.

did read 1 story that the family of him brought or "donated"some electric fans and food items to help the other inmates

An Italian diplomat detained in the Philippines for alleged child abuse will be allowed to leave prison briefly to undergo medical treatment, a government prosecutor said Wednesday.

Daniele Bosio, the Italian ambassador to Turkmenistan,

suffers from a kidney condition and blood sugar problems that may have been worsened by his stressful confinement in a crowded cell, a member of his family told AFP.

The 46-year-old diplomat was holidaying in the Philippines when he was arrested five weeks ago

following a complaint by a children's advocacy group who alleged they saw him acting "inappropriately" with three homeless boys at a park near Manila.

"Of course, I don't want to risk his health condition... so I decided that it is best to grant his request for a medical check-up," state prosecutor Agripino Baybay told reporters.

Bosio was earlier detained in a tiny cell with dozens of other people at a police station about an hour's drive from the Philippine capital.

The prosecutor said the Italian would have to return to the cell after his treatment and attend more investigative hearings aimed at determining if there is enough evidence for him to be charged with a crime.

The notoriously slow Philippine judicial system means the proceedings could drag on for months.(if not years)

Bosio's brother Andreas told AFP the diplomat, who was suspended from his post after his arrest, would consult a specialist in Manila.

His family insists he is innocent and he was only trying to help local street children when he was arrested.

They have described him as a frequent backpacker who even provided financial support to a children's school in the Philippines.

the Backpacking Ambassador. It has a ring to it.

not surprised he got suspended from his job immeadiately after his arrest. Ambassador is a very senior diplomatic rank. It is roughly equivalent to colonel and above in the armed forces, depending on which country you are Ambassador to.
