Popular Post frosty (chris) Posted April 15, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) So I have my mattress, bought from the local mall 4000pesos, but need a bed to go with it, looked around several stores, nothing I liked. One day on the tricycle on the way to the markets spot a furniture maker, lugar-lang (stop) I say, pay my 11pesos for the trip and then the fun starts.Looking around the shop I spot a wooden bed I liked so enquire about the price 1500 pesos, delivered, sounds good. Ok I say, and while we are here a bamboo 3 piece lounge set for 1200 pesos. Now sir what size is the bed, double I say, yes sir but what size in inches, well I say you make the beds surely you know the size, sorry sir need your size, double I say, for 2, oh you want 2 beds, no no no 1 bed double size, ok sir what is the size. :bash: There is a mattress store around the corner and I say I will go and measure can I borrow there tape, no problems he says, how long you be sir, well falling in line with the local custom I say I be back soon, which means when ever I am good and ready to return. I stroll down to get the size for the bed, have a cig and coffee and stroll back again, maybe all up 30 minutes, they are all sitting there waiting, aha ok sir have size, will deliver wednesday pm, give a deposit and really wonder if I will ever see my bed or lounge. Sure enough come wednesday tricycle arrives with the bed on the top, lounge and chairs strapped to the back, gee's it looked funny, but seems to be the norm here. The driver is on his own so I have to help get the bed off and up the stairs to the 2nd floor, looked light but geez it was heavy, well finally manoeuvred it into the cr and up the stairs, was knackered after that so me and the driver had a few sml to cool off. Funny when he left I put the mattress on the bed, the sizes I gave them, they made the bed for the inside measurement not the outside, so the width of the bed is 2 inches short hahahahhahha. :1 (103): More fun in the Philipinnes Edited April 15, 2014 by Frosty
Jake Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Hey Frosty, If I could make a suggestion.....please treat both your new mattress and bed frame for bed bugs or insects. I don't know what the locals use these days but perhaps your wife or GF can ask around. You don't want to have insect bites in all the wrong places.....he, he. By the way, I had to look up the word knackered and now I understand where you're coming from: Urban Dictionary: knackered -- after my seventh ejaculation I was well and truly knackered. Gotta love them Aussies -- Jake

Used a can of insect repellant on the bed, so far no bites from the insect, but I won't say about the g/f :mocking: . Must be ok, she seems to spend a lot of time there sleeping. Take care amego. P.S. will have to americanise my posts, so the tin tanks can understand them  Edited April 15, 2014 by Frosty
Popular Post Mike S Posted April 15, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 15, 2014 :hystery: :hystery: :hystery: :hystery: Sorry can't help myself as we just purchased a wooden bed and I've been meaning to tell about our experiences .... "Cause it's More Fun in the Philippines" Several weeks ago we went to the furniture maker (or rather my asawa went ... I know better not to meddle .... :mocking: ) ...... we drove by the shops and looked at their samples out front .... we picked on and headed back home to do the drawing of the bed (learned that a long time ago here in the Phils .... get a picture or drawing) .... I drew it up on graft paper with all the measurements and to scale .... so of she goes to inquire about price ..... Now I have to inject here that the bed is a full size but due to not being able to get it up the stairs I made the drawing of 2 twin beds pushed together with no head board attached ..... that to be attached once the beds were in place ..... all of this was clearly drawn on the graft paper (or so I thought) .... my asawa gets there and shows the drawing to the old man in charge (be prepared as this we found out is a family affair) he commented on how nice the drawing was and he would have no trouble building it .... oh .. and it should be noted as I'm no light weight the bed needed to be made from substantial sized wood which means no 2x2 legs or 1x3 side rails and I wanted it made from anti-termite wood (forgot the name) ... we gave them a deposit of 1/2 the total cost so they could get materials ... We were told it would take appx. 3 days .... 4 days later we get a call the bed is ready .... so off she goes to get ... or rather look at the bed .... well when she got their they had put head boards on both the beds and I had requested and drawn that the legs for the head of both beds be 4 inches longer than the feet .... and that wasn't done either .... well she told them that would not work and they needed to re-due them ... the woman called the carpenter who built the bed (another relative) why he didn't follow the drawing he told her because that is the way HE wanted to build it .... unbelievable They wanted the rest of the money to buy new material for the new beds .... my asawa told them "no way" payment when job completed .... they said they would call in a few days .... now it should be noted here that my asawa has talked to no less than 4 different members of this family ... all of whom appear to be working there .... Well we get thew call to come back and pick up the beds .... she gets there and while looking under the bed she finds that they used couple of scrap 2x2 instead of 2x3 braces for the supports of the slats .... they had put the 3x2's on the first beds ..... so my asawa pitched a fit .... and told them to fix it while she waited and also the head board which was now all one piece and detached looked like .... as she told me a 2 year old child made .... she told them to fix it now na ..... so after about 3 hours she told me they were on their way by tricycle with the finished beds .... when they got their the delivery driver and his helper took the beds upstairs and set them up .... the guy then told us that he is one of the owners sons and the problem they have there is that all the family members want to be in charge so lots of things that are custom made get screwed up ... he apologized and said that's why he is the deliveryman and not one of the carpenters .... So why didn't I go there instead of sending my asawa .... well first off there is nothing I could have done except get mad and that would not have helped ..... secondly I trust my asawa explicitly as she knew what she wanted and what needed to be done .... we just had a hard headed carpenter who wanted to do things his way .... :1 (103): :cheersty:

deevey Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 On the Topic of beds ... within manila I know of an ex-pat who makes furniture (and any other bits and bobs you might need) out of steel, e.g. could steel frame take-apart beds (and anything else) to order for about 4k if you fire across a drawing ;) I'm sure he can get them delivered as well.

earthdome Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I had a cabinet made for a nice four burner glass top stove. The cabinet maker I was referred to by a neighbor did an excellent job. Followed my instructions plus made suggestions of his own which I concurred with. If anyone needs cabinet or word working done in Baguio, let me know by PM so I can give you his name and number. I may use him in the future to build a dining room table with chairs if I don't find a set I like in my travels. Though he is very busy right now. He got the sub contract for all the cabinetry in a new resort hotel back in his home province.

Must be ok, she seems to spend a lot of time there sleeping. Are you sure she hasn't passed out by the insect repellant? :) Serious: A year ago or so one tourist died and an other had to go to intensive care to survive, after slept in a hotel, which had treated the hotel beds with some insect repellant a bit earlier :bash: I suppouse using one of the repellants, which are banned in Europe...
