Forum Support Old55 Posted July 23, 2014 Forum Support Posted July 23, 2014 It takes money to live. Most folks work in order to provide for their needs. Some Expats have found a way to quit the 9 to 5 and move to Philippines sooner than later. How did you come to the decision to quit working and move thousands of miles to live? Very few people wake up every day thinking Oh how nice now I can go to work. Clearly guys that made the move had few or no obligations or responsibility's and at least a modest amount of ready cash. Your financial situation is not important clearly those that move have enough to survive. It would be interesting to know in what way or for what reason you decided to make the move.
Popular Post i am bob Posted July 23, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 23, 2014 I wrote a nice long explanation on how I am moving with debt outstanding to the Philippines but then I re-read your question as posted. Gee... After all the thought and work I put into the first response, don't you fell guilty? No? oh.... Now to go back to the original question - how did I come to the decision to quit working and move thousands of miles to live? That's easy! I hate the cold. She's where it's warm. Question answered. Simple as that! :mocking:

Popular Post Jack Peterson Posted July 24, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 24, 2014 How did you come to the decision to quit working and move thousands of miles to live? Long ago, I remember Posting on a topic here, that over the last 25 years, I have been a Foreigner, somewhere, Denmark, Norway, Malta, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, and last but by no means least Spain. a Transition would not be hard for me. Having met Azon and falling in love, and retirement starting to get closer, it was time to think. I had been to the Philippines many times before but never the Southern islands. One trip to Dumaguete sealed, all my doubts and then began the homework. After doing the Sums, We got married. The biggest issue was not, funnily enough Money. it was being able to get my hands on it, ( pensions) outside the UK. So, having then Found out about the Social Security agreement in force with the PI, that was taken care of. Then I had the Stroke. (I was in Gibraltar) with the constant (Albeit electronic) help and support from my family here, I realised I had more going for me in Dumaguete, than anywhere else. (Hey! even you guys here helped my recovery) I arrived here some 2 years ago and apart from the immigration issues I love it to bits. I was not, Eligible for pensions when I arrived, but with her salary and my savings, we did it. Now we are clear, house built and a good Life is with us. I am convinced that none of this would have been the case, had I chose another country to retire to. Nor in fact, any other woman. She is 1 in a 000,000. MORAL: My Wife and Daughter are my reason for coming all the way to live. All the rest is immaterial but is part and parcel. AND folks, That's the truth of it. Popular Post barryneves Posted July 24, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 24, 2014 In my case, when I retired from a UK police force, I moved back to Brazil, where I had been brought up and spent my childhood and teens as it always felt more like home than the UK. Sadly, the increasing violence in Rio, where I lived, got to the stage where it was interfering with my quality of life. The choice to move here however, was largely coincidental. I joined a friend who works in Bangkok on a weeks holiday here to avoid the water festival in Thailand and felt so at home here (probably due to the Spanish and Catholic influences). So here I am in Dumaguete (or near to it anyway). Still miss some things about Rio a lot, particularly the food and beach, but otherwise very happy here.
Popular Post lyno 47 Posted July 24, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 24, 2014 As for me I had been to the phils many a time, tried many sth east Asian countries ,the fact that my partner is from Cebu and that many speak English is a real bonus. But the main reason is I see the real decline in my own country my rights being eroded the cost of living is out of control. So I have sold my house and am getting all the stuff I need done, so I can leave oz and just come back every now and then to see my kids and grand kids. The close friends and family I have say they will come and visit once I am settled.
Popular Post Papa Carl Posted July 24, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 24, 2014 Work to Live, or Live to Work! A dilemma for some and not for others. I know I used to be one and now I am the other. Glad I changed my way of thinking and thankful for a wife and daughter who motivated me to do so. Papa Carl

sonjack2847 Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 In August 2010 the company I worked for went into liquidation because they had too many late payers. It was 14 days before my first trip here. I came and liked what I saw so my plan was to work in the UK part of the year and live here the rest of the time. Unfortunately there was a recession in the construction industry so I was spending my savings on just living in the UK.I came again Jan and May 2011 to see if I could live here and all was good so in September that year I made the move.I live on the rental from my house in the UK and I have a much better life than I would in the Uk.
Tukaram (Tim) Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I was planning on moving over here (or Thailand) when I retired in 2019. but I got my VA disability increased from 30% to 50%, and both my kids moved out - I was a single dad. All of a sudden I found myself working with not particular reason. The 50% disability is not enough to live on in the US but is (almost) enough here in the PI's. So here I am! :tiphat:
