El Negrito Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I truly hope I am not violating forum rules or anything. I am your typical guy who just skims the rules and hopes he doesn't break them unless it is something important like financial stuff or immigration. Thanks in advance for understanding and feel free to tell me if I am out of line. Now to the question. In any of your experiences does race matter to Filipinas? I mean I have seen white men (obvious choice for them from what I have seen), Asian men, Black men and many other races posting here. This leads me to think that race is not to important. It seems like "Western" men from anywhere (Italy, Spain, America, Canada, UK) are good to go, although again white American males seem to have the preference. Is this so? Again feel free to set me straight as I am a noob. PS For the record I am a black male. Or for the scammers black mail. LOL
Forum Support Popular Post Old55 Posted July 25, 2014 Forum Support Popular Post Posted July 25, 2014 Hi Blackman, welcome sir! Great question and one that has come up several times over the years. Quick answer.... Yes and no. Filipinos like other Asians can be racist but not as your question indicates. Filipinos for the most part respect others, they also respect those they think rich. Being Canadian you are a "Rich Kano". If you act in a polite respectful manor you will get smiles and respect back. Many Filipinos will stereotype Foreigners. Being that you are Black often assumptions will be made that you are exceptionally good at basketball things like that not negative stuff. For sure there will be the odd few morons who will dislike you just because of your skin tone but that is rare. I've told this story a few times. In the late 90's staying at a dive center in the Providences of Leyte another American arrived about the same time I did. He was African American, we talked about how he would be treated there. I had no idea and he had just arrived in Philippines. Come to find out he was treated like a rock star. Not because of his skin tone because he was a nice guy attractive mid 30s did not drink or smoke treated others with respect and kindness. He was single and had lots of Filipinas smiling at him. I know he had a great trip and the diving was amazing too.

Popular Post El Negrito Posted July 26, 2014 Author Popular Post Posted July 26, 2014 Thanks! You guys are great! I am actually a dual citizen of the US and Canada. Mom is Canadian and Dad is American. So I have 2 passports and the whole she-bang. Most of my life that has worked as a plus for travel and such but for the most part I use my US passport for travel. Little bit of a strange dynamic though because even though I grew up in Canada I actually prefer the US and have mostly American or Mexican friends and worked most of my life in the US. However being Canadian has left me with characteristics like a different accent and behaviors that others have resulted in interesting comments such as "You don't sound black" or "You are the whitest black man I know". LOL Of course all this said in good fun and it's probably true! That said I ride the good stereo types as far as I can too! Anyway, not to disrespect anyone but, I am not a "gangsta" or "thug" type, my parents never tolerated that. I was well educated and taught to be well spoken and polite. I still like basketball and even some rap but, I also like country, heavy metal, alternative and even NASCAR. I am also well traveled and cultured. I speak Spanish enough to get by and even have learned Russian and to a lesser extent Czech enough to get by when I was either visiting or living in those countries. I ALWAYS do my best to treat ladies, children and the elderly with respect. So according to your comments and observations I should be an interesting exception to some stereo types. You guys have really provided so much information for me to think about in your 2 brief comments that I am astounded. Please everyone keep the thoughts and comments coming. And I am not thin skinned so please don't worry about something you say being perceived by me as negative or possibly offending me. Thanks everyone!

Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted July 26, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 26, 2014 Race. . . .hmmmm I find many filipinas who have a fetish for white males. The questions I ask get answers like: MacArthur is our national hero so we like guys who are tall and white like that. The observations I have made lead me to believe it is more a matter of family norms. If there are blacks married to family members and the marriage is a good one then the girls often want that same fairy tale romance. Same for Koreans, Japanese etc. Thus my observations convince me that there is a filipina for every race but each individual girl may have a race preference.
Popular Post Brucewayne Posted July 26, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 26, 2014 Some like dark skin, some like light skin, but they all like green. A word of warning, many here use the N word, but those who do don't know it is a bad word. Chalk it up to naivety and not prejudice.

El Negrito Posted July 26, 2014 Author Posted July 26, 2014 Some like dark skin, some like light skin, but they all like green. A word of warning, many here use the N word, but those who do don't know it is a bad word. Chalk it up to naivety and not prejudice. Thanks for the heads up. If I understand you right maybe you are referring to "Negro or Negrito"? I live in Mexico now and have for 8 years so I am use to negrito, actually it is a term of endearment and I even have a soccer shirt with "El Negrito" on it. I lived in Ukraine for a bit and there they actually use what is pretty close to the bad "N word" but there it is not as offensive as in the west. They actually only see it as slightly offensive because of what they hear from the west. So like I said I am not to thin skinned and not too shocked by others or their cultural habits. Thanks again!
