He was a good guy.  He used to let us former flag waving types grab a beer out of his fridge if we weren't in company and were off-watch "as long as we left our money on the fridge".  Just goes to show, there's no accounting for character in the long run.

I think that money (and the power that comes with it) changes a lot of people and usually not for the better. I have watched people go from $70K to $200K and it inflates their head proportionally.
