MANILA - Central Mall Biñan will soon launch the largest solar rooftop project in the country.

In a statement, Solar Philippines Commercial Rooftop Projects Inc said it will switch on the 700-kiloWatt power project on September 20.

Spreading over 7,000 square meters of sunlit roof space, the solar power plant on Central Mall Biñan is made up of 2,514 solar panels on steel mounting structures that can withstand wind speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour.

The energy generated by the panels is converted into electricity by 87 inverters, ready to be used by the Central Mall Biñan tenants, administration and mall goers.

The mall's operator, Premiumlink Development Corp, tapped Solar Philippines, which shouldered the cost of designing, constructing and installing the solar rooftop facility.

Under a purchase power agreement inked by the parties, the energy generated by the solar power plant is sold to the establishment for its own consumption, at a rate lower than the usual electricity rates in the area.

With the power plant on its roof augmenting 30 percent of its total energy consumption, the mall’s management is able to save more than P100,000 monthly on electricity bills, Solar Philippines said.

The Central Mall Biñan Solar Rooftop Project marks many firsts for renewable energy in the Philippines. It is the first solar project granted loan financing by Bank of the Philippines Islands. It is also the first solar rooftop project to enjoy tax exemptions and tax credits, as Solar Philippines is the first solar solutions provider registered with the Board of Investments (BOI).

Besides the Central Mall Biñan solar rooftop facility, Solar Philippines is also putting up similar projects in SM North EDSA, Robinsons Palawan, and City Mall Roxas.

That is very ambitious!  I have never seen anything like it in the US.  I wonder if it includes some storage capability?  It seems like it would need some storage.
