I have been directed by the higher authority to take some "American" cigarettes to Leyte with me for our Christmas trip to her home village. Everyone there is a smoker and last time I promised to bring some real American smokes with me. The advice has been that it should be something that they don't see there every day, so I guess really big global brands are out. I have never been a smoker so I'm clueless. Any advice about a good brand to fill these requirements would help. And since the import limit in Philippines is probably the typical one carton, so price really does not matter too much. I suspect that your 'higher authority' outranks our admin's (MikeB) excellent advice so I shall throw in my 2 cents. Cigarettes are dirt cheap here and locals will not respect the price you pay. You may think you are getting a good deal but when Marlboroughs here cost US $1 a pack I can see no sense to bringing them with you. If you MUST bring them then I suggest a carton of Camels or, better yet, 8 different packs and spread them around for the novelty value. Chocolate is a much more universal gift. Like you I don't know anything about cigarettes other than you can bring two cartons into Philippines. Duty free shops would have a good selection reasonably priced. Perhaps "The One Who Must Be Obeyed" could suggest a particular brand because I sure don't know of any American cigarette brand considered uncommon. LOL.... There isn't the same fascination with really expensive cigarettes that you find in China, where a pack of the brand that Mao smoked c an set you back US 20 - that is per pack, not per carton - and it is really appreciated - like a bottle of Scotch in Norway!I just take K two cartons of Marlboro. But for a present, I would suggest Camel or 555s. 555s come in a nice rigid box that looks more expensive than the soft packing of Marlboro or Camel. I write as an ex smoker - stopped 15 years ago.
