110 Volt Appliances

A new store opened in Subic Freeport, called HMR Trading.  Is this a chain?  Anybody heard of it in other cities?  It is located next door to the old Royal Duty Free.

They have mostly returns and repairs, mostly from the US.  There are some new items that are probably surplus, etc.  Almost all the electrical items are 110 volts.  Lots of tools, small appliances, etc.  They have a lot of Craftsman stuff that doesn't look bad.  They even have repair labels on them.  Seems like if you test it, it might be ok to buy.

Prices are tempting.  There was another store like this in Subic Freeport called Deals, that went under.  They were asking ridiculous prices for the junky returns and repairs they had, mostly from Australia.  The prices here are much better.

I asked about the warranty and apparently they offer a 3 month warranty on most items.  They have brand new gasoline weed whackers (can't remember the off brand name) that seemed to be good quality, for about p4000.  He said those have a 1 year warranty.  Seemed like a good deal.

It might be worth your time to stop in, especially if you wanted 110 volt items.

Sounds good but why would anyone want 110 volts items when the voltage almost everywhere in the Philippines is 220 volts?

I don't know and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  There is a market here due to the previous military housing that has 110.  If the prices are good they might sell some.  As an example, they had Mr. Coffee makers for about p600, so they might sell some of those to us expats.

The store has a lot of non-electric goods too.

If they sell 110 Volt items to Filipinos I'm sure they will burn out the first time they plugs them in because every Filipino I have asked didn't know what the voltage is in the Philippines.  One high school graduate who I gave a written test to tried to cheat by looking on her phone charger so her answer was 4.7 V.

Most Filipinos do not think much about safety so that does not apply here.
