Then there are people like the news anchor in the US, Tom Brokaw who has no accent because nobody speaks like him. As I understand it, he has a speech impediment but he was/is understandable and people like the sound of his voice. My brother sounds a lot like him after about 12 beers.

Ah, if you Yanks only knew how many people you see daily on television are Canadian because they speak perfectly and with neutral accents...  Case in point? Alex Trebec of Jeopardy...  Hehe! 

I myself have the same dreaded sound...  I lived with my sister for my last year in Canada...  She used to get angry over my "radio" voice...  My natural voice...  She couldn't argue with me and win...  Hehe..! To keep her happy, I would revert to my Canadian East Coast sound...  

Have I lost either one?  Nope....
