Family Involvement In Relationships

We visited family in Baguio last last weekend and it was BIL's b-day, so a lot of family came over.  My wife's cousin is an older (about 58 I think) widowed lady, P.  She has a daughter, M, who is 28.  She has another daughter whose wedding we attended and I like that couple a lot.

Anyway, M tells me at the b-day party that she has a Danish boyfriend and they are going to Manila to the airport to meet him on Sunday.  Later, my wife fills in the details for me.  He is 28, same as her.  Although Danish, he is living in Sweden.  They have known each other on the internet for one whole month and they are in love.  Some commentators at the party used the word "fiance" but I am not sure if that is accurate yet.  According to my wife, M has had few or no boyfriends.  She is nice looking so I guess she is just shy or careful.

Momma P is a Facebook fanatic.  She posts everything.  I like her a lot but she goes overboard with FB.  Almost everyday she goes to Burnham Park with friends for Taebo and they post multiple pictures of themselves in a "pose".

So I get to follow this budding relationship on FB, all week.  I told my wife, if that was me, I would probably be scared off by the family and that they should give the couple some time to get to know each other.  Every move was recorded all week in a photo album called "M & L, sweetness overload".  I understand having an escort at the beginning, but jeez, let them be!  Also, momma P added to most of the posts that SHE, momma, was in love!

Sunday night, he was not there as scheduled.  Pool party at a hotel indicates about 6 people total are part of the reception / escort committee.

Monday, he arrives.  Lots of photos at the airport, etc.  The guy must have been exhausted after his delay.  Seems like an ok guy, based on pics.  Appears to be going pre-maturely kalbo.

A couple of days in Manila, seeing some sights.  Manila based uncles, etc., join the festivities.  (My wife says P has 12 or 13 siblings!)  Should I assume the new guy was paying for everything? Many pictures posted.

Off to La Union to a beach resort and it appears they spend the rest of the week there.  Many pictures posted.   I didn't see any pictures of him in Baguio.  Which is funny because momma P initially told my wife that he would stay at her house, and my wife told her that might not be a good idea, due to culture shock, so maybe P took the advice.

So what do you think?  A future marriage made in heaven, or a Danish guy running from the family with his tail between his legs?  I'll keep you posted!

Time will tell I guess. Hopefully he won't be overwhelmed by the family, but that's his call. Let's hope the gal's lack of experience with men/boyfriends won't lead her to any rash decisions.

I have a simple limited FB just to keep up with family and friends in the States, because I can't deal with the Filipino FB style here that you're referring to, and I'd be swamped with "friends".- My husband has so many  distant relatives on his FB that he can't stand, but feels obliged to be FB friends with them.Ugh! Just looking through his account makes my head hurt!lol

I hope it works out for them.  Like any relationship, they have to give it time.  I haven't met him, but he seems ok.  Not sure what he does for a living.  He is young, so I wonder if their plan is for her to move to Europe.   She is a nice girl.  Maybe you have talked to her as she works at a call center for U.S. Dish Network!

Bet a nickel that this Danish guy arrived with some hidden baggages.  But this is a real life drama waiting to unfold, so I also have my bowl of popcorn ready to stuff my face.

Thanks Dan for another forum drama.

Well OMW, seeing as  you know the family already, it would appear that your sister in law has not rushed into anything serious before, so let's hope common sense prevails.

Being both of the same age, there is a pretty good chance they will hit it off, so long as he is not used as a ATM!

Don't we all love a happy ending......

I think the entourage should be kept to the minimum necessary. Dad with his machete should be just as effective as 8 family members.

I think it will depend on if the guy has been to the Philippines before which he possibly has not and if he researched the country and culture before arriving.
