Monorail system eyed for Mandaue City to Cebu City

 

A consortium of Filipino-Chinese-Canadian transportation investors will conduct a feasibility study for the establishment of a monorail system from Mandaue City to Cebu City. This was announced in a technical briefing and consultation meeting Friday at the Mandaue City Hall with Mandaue City Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna and Chief of Staff Mae Elaine Bathan.

The Philtram Transportation Consortium Inc. has agreed to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the city government to conduct a study that will run from four to six months.

The feasibility study will be conducted by international consulting and engineering firm Systra to determine the economic feasibility of the proposed monorail project, point out the possible routes with the highest passenger traffic in the city and finalize the entire cost of the project.

Philtram founder and chief operating officer Jose Guardo Jr. said they will engage into a joint venture with international railway firms China Railway Engineering Consulting (CREC) Group and Bombardier to design an elevated monorail transit system that has the capacity to transport over 48,000 passengers in an hour per direction through a 100-meter long train.

This is Philtram’s first foray into the Philippine transportation system.

Guardo said the monorail trains would have an interval of 90 seconds, which the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) in Manila cannot do.

Guardo said the distance of each train station would be about 500 meters to a kilometer.

Philtram plans to build 13 stations from Mandaue to Cebu City with the foot of Marcelo Fernan Bridge as the terminal hub.

Each train can run in a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour for a straight line and has a turning radius of 46 meters.

The monorail system will be elevated five to ten meters above the road to ensure that its operations will not be hampered by traffic.

Guardo said the monorail project, including the depot, train and infrastructure, costs around USD40 million or approximately Php 2 billion per kilometer which is significantly cheaper and faster to build as compared to the MRT and Light Railway Transit (LRT).

Philtram might want to lean on China and not Bombardier if this is to really happen. Bombardier has been unable to supply electric trains to Toronto in the same province let alone to another country.

Sounds like as good an excuse as any for a Canadian to spend a few months in the Philippines. I doubt anything will come of it though.

I have long been saying that monorails should be built all over the country, easily the best way to decongest the main commuter routes. Start with Manila and Cebu based on simple and robust designs that are cost-efficient, then scale up across the country. Light rail, mono rail, some metro... the Philippines needs an awful lot of investment in public transportation.

A Chinese rail Company has been doing feasibility studies for some time in Dumaguete on a proposed Monorail but at this time, I believe  an issue on land Purchase for the project is outweighing the common sense of it all. Can anyone really Understand or Imagen the Chaos it would cause and the land need for the project. Stations need to be built, Overhead Intersections would be needed. NAH I think whilst the Idea is Good it would be better to move the City (Any City) and Start again with the Infrastructure in First. At the Moment an Argument is where is it coming From and Going To. Crisky they have been 7+ years deciding if they will or will not Build a new International Airport.Reason for the delay is land Cost (They say)

Las Vegas did it in 2004, with the cars and signals from Bombardier. Bombardier also did the monorail at DisneyWorld in Orlando, the most heavily used monorail in the world.

BUT did las Vagas own the Land because until this Land Ownership thing is overhauled here in the PI it is just not going to happen.

We have a tree on the end of the Runway here in Dumaguete and another in a Barangay down towards Bacong that is causing No end of Problems because of archaic Land ownership Laws In our own Countries it would not happen But..............:whistling:

Thats the main problem here in the PI, Land Ownership. Seattle has been using their Monorail system since 1962 and the cars were built in Germany. It would be a good system if they could just get around the Land Ownership, which is going to have to change if the PI wants to do any real transportation projects.

It's taken them umpteen years to get nowhere with a bus system so their chances of putting in a monorail system in our lifetime are slim to nonexistent. Perhaps it will link to the bridges connecting Negros, Cebu, Bohol and Leyte.

So whats the question of land ownership on the bridge?
