Opinions are starting to change on statins.

They say that your body produces 75% of your chlo so meds can fluctuate the other 25%. One's body needs chlo to be healthy. I agree that there are various opinions and studies on the matter so I say it is better to get one's chlo in what they say is normal without taking meds.

Agreed but this where so many of us fail, can it be our Diets?

Both diets of high chlo foods and lack of exercise can lead to high chlo. It is one of those things like if you take a multi vitamin, is it really doing you any good? One can have a heart attack or stroke for others causes besides high chlo. A friend had a stroke when the lining of an artery caused a blockage.

I read after I had my Stroke that hereditary health can play a big part, my father Died of a Stroke but he was the Only one in the family as far as I know

So do you think it can be hereditary to have HC?

Yes, I think so. But you have to look at what is hereditary and what is customary like if a family eats the same high saturated fat foods all the time, they say that being overweight is hereditary but really it is not.

Opinions are starting to change on statins. Often the lowering of cholesterol becomes more of a battle between the physician's arrogant demands that it bow to him, and the body's own ability to produce cholesterol and trying to maintain that 'high' level that medical science today does not understand. So the patient is subjected to multiple drugs in an attempt to get the body to do what the physician wants, not what the body wants.

High cholesterol is BAD simply because physicians are taught that it is bad... by drug companies that make and sell the 'LIFE LONG treatment'. For those who refuse treatment and live long lives, it is easily explained away that they just got lucky.

High cholesterol is individualized and we are now finding out that 'bad' may not be so bad after all.

I agree  100% this link totally changed my thinking about cholesterol.

I am guessing hereditary trumps diet. My father, his brother, my grandfather, his brother, and great grandfather all had high cholesterol (only thing I know going back further is I am firstborn son of a firstborn son going back to the 1200s). My great grandfather died of enlarged heart, the other 4 all had triple or quad bypass surgeries. I eat like crap (unfortunately), need to lose 30 kilos, yet have "normal" cholesterol. All I can think of is "thanks Mom". If any should have high numbers it is me, apparently I got the right mix of German blood added into my Hungarian blood and broke the pattern.

High Cholesterol, yes it gets blamed for causing most blood/ heart conditions.

When I was younger I use to eat Chips ( French fries )with everything, till visiting the Eye Clinic one time with dust in my eyes.

The doctor having had my eyes washed out, asked you have noticed the "white rings" in your eyes?

Apparently a sign of high cholesterol, I was told to change my diet which I did immediately, much as I still love my fry ups and dairy products.

Everything in moderation, is now my philosophy.

Good luck Mike, take the advice given, see the specialist, and here's to the future

Carbs... carbs... carbs... Carbohydrates... especially sugar... is a major cause of obesity and diabetes. Low carb and high protein if you want to lose some weight or get better control of your type 2 diabetes.

+1.

This is a particularly sticky subject for me as I no longer take statins and have had a couple arguments with doctors who told me I should (had to). I did my research, got off the meds and started taking garlic and hawthorn, both of which can help with Blood pressure (mine's still decent) and cholesterol. Last year I ran out of the supplements and said to myself "what the hell. How do I know they even help." Went to my annual physical months later and my cholesterol was the highest it had ever been tested. Doctor of course said I had to go on statins. I went back to the garlic and hawthorn. Two months later I got re-tested. Total cholesterol down 35 points.

I believe that statins are the most prescribed drug in the US. There's a reason.
