I also arrived here 4 years ago with only two suitcases, one backpack. Felt great. Before arriving, I sold everything. I had two garage sales, then gave away or donated items I couldn't sell. Ignored the chorus of naysayers telling me I'm a fool, crazy, or flat out insane, etc. Some flat out laughed; "You're moving to the Philippines???" Even had some family members pissed off - thought I was being irresponsible. Irresponsible to whom? My kids are in their 30's and going ok. Hell, even my ex-wife was better off than me.  I just dismissed all as nonsense.

So, I look back with a smile.  No regrets - glad I stuck to the plan and dismissed any doubts that had occassionaly popped up in my mind and plowed forward.  Married a filipina a year after arriving. We still behave like newlyweds.

I was totally with ya on everything you said until that part.  I chose to just live together and that always tends to backfire eventually.  One day I will get it right

I am not sure getting away with your skin still attached qualifies as 'backfiring'. Had you gotten married you may well have been skinned alive... 'She got the Gold Mine, I got the Shaft'... You might not have picked the right one but you certainly did it right.

I did ship quite a bit.  More clothes than I meant to... but each piece of porcelain dinnerware got a shirt wrapped around it. Each pan got a bath towel.  I figured why rough it? I have my nice dishes, my Chantal cookware, and my Sabatier knives (all from the early 80s - I used to work for Williams-Sonoma).  I would like to have brought a couple of my nice cutting boards... but they would not fit in the BB box, nor would my enclume (custom made wrought iron pan rack).

 

I have my pans, but I miss my enclume...

Just find some guys who make bolos out of leaf springs, start with the guy selling real and not tourist bolos at the market and work backwards.
