Poleman Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Well, just joined and this is the first post I saw...interesting. I'm an American from Southern California and called it quits in the good ol' USA .. just getting too weird over there so I'm here seeking retirement paradise. Regarding the establishment in PPS, Palawan ... that is now where I am staying and would love to come visit and toss one down with y'all. Where is this place? I'm familiar with Rizal Ave, the National Highway, Malvar ..... give me directions, the side of the street it is on...and between what blocks or direction (N, S, E, or W) of a landmark (McDonalds?) (Skaky's?) etc. Funny here, they don't do address numbers consistently so any location info would be requested. I AM the Poleman

Poleman Posted July 19, 2017 Author Posted July 19, 2017 Ha ha, I was also the Egg man, working the egg department for 4 hours at the local Walmart. It was less money than I made in the '60's, but great workout working in the sub-cold dairy department .... I lost so much weight there schlepping eggs to and fro in the cold that I lost about 1 pound a day consistently for 3 weeks. Retirement can be dangerous if you don't keep busy and with my broken back, busy was what I needed instead of sitting around like a .... uhh, WALRUS. LOL Thanks, and Mabuhay to ya. I first thought that you called yourself a Poleman because you came from Poland but this quote says thats unlikely so I am curious if there is a story behind the name? A fireman who slides down them poles would be my next guess? Welcome to the forum.

My guess was he works for the power company, a poleman being the guy climbing power poles for maintenance etc.
Popular Post Poleman Posted July 20, 2017 Author Popular Post Posted July 20, 2017 Well, gents ... you are all wrong. I am a native Eskimo from the North Pole. No, wait - I am native anti-Eskimo from the South Pole ... wait, no - that's not it either. Actually, I am a pollster, I professionally gather peoples opinions and form statistical models based on those decisions. There's a wise saying in our business: Definition of Statistics? The science of producing unreliable facts from reliable figures. So, fun and crazy banter is my favorite and NOW I will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing else. Someone guessed my trade. I am a retired Pacific Bell Lineman. Pacific Bell went through a lot of changes. Back in 1985, if anyone remembers, US Judge Harold Greene broke apart the horrible monopoly AT&T, you know the one - they made the best communications services in the world. The people hated monopolies and I agree...unless it's the monopoly with the funny colored money and Park Place. So, Judge Green divested the monopoly of which Pacific Telephone was a branch of. A private company bought the rights to Pacific Telephone and created Pacific Bell (I'm not 100% sure of the order of names and dates of names, but let's flow with this one). The judge created six other 'Baby Bell's', Ameritech, US Worst (I mean US West), Ameritech, Southwest Bell, and a few others I can't recall. These independents thrived as regional companies and were now on the market for buying and selling. Pacific Bell then sold to an investor group Pacific Telesis. Later Southwest Bell (out of Texas) bought Pacific Telesis, which then became SBC Telephone in California. My service truck was repainted twice with the new logo's ... then eventually they got smart and just put decals wraps on the vehicles, it was cheaper than repaints. Northern California remained Pacific Telesis, I believe...along with Nevada. Now, the funny part about people, business and the USA way. Eventually, AT&T divested the rest of their businesses that supported telephone companies, businesses like Western Electric and Bell Labs. Those businesses created some of the most incredible inventions of the century eventually leading to the development of the transistor, modern fiber communications, all sorts of things that are now a fabric of our life today. If it weren't for AL GORE, THEY would have eventually created the internet (political joke, ha ha ?)d. So, AT&T was only involved in other than direct communications stuff and eventually migrated into the cel phone business. They then became at&t (note, not capital letters anymore - tricky stuff). Now at&t is buying BACK the same telephone companies that they were forced to divest after the breakup of the monopoly. Sorry about the long winded stuff, that's me. Hope you enjoyed a walk through the communications wonder of the century. For more detailed (and quite possibly more accurate) check Wikipedia about AT&T, they probably have more precise information. My job was as a installation and repair lineman working out of Anaheim, south of Los Angeles and then Simi Valley, Ventura County, So. Cal. I loved the job, loved the folks I worked with, loved the customers and most of all LOVED the money. The work was hard, union fees expensive, but I managed to eke out a good existence with them - until ..... (drum roll please) .... until I suffered a severe back injury on the job which ended my career at 56 years old ... with just a few years to go until full retirement. Life happens and that ended my good life for a life of almost not being able to walk. Surgery corrected my issue and although I will never walk upright and proud anymore, I'm humbled by the fact that 'stuff' happens and you must move on. Living in Arizona (cheaper), I purchased 4 acres and was about to develop my ranch when my online gal convinced me to move to the Philippines. I did so, and we are here now. Mabuhay from Puerto Princesa and other expats in the area, let' s get together and toss one down at the local resorts. Poleman. Uncommon Valor in an uncommon Job. Risking life and limb to serve your communications needs.
