Duterte pulls Philippine police out of brutal war on drugs

Quote

Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has ordered police to end all operations in his deadly war on drugs after a 15-month campaign in which officers have killed thousands.

Duterte’s office released a public memorandum telling police, the military and other state bodies to leave the conduct of all campaigns and operations to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

The agency’s 1,800 staff make up just over 1% of the 160,000-strong national police, meaning the new order could significantly reduce the extrajudicial killings.

So no more EJKs?

EDIT:  That was just a rhetorical question.  Duterte says this will reduce EJKs so it must be so.  I am not looking to stir up controversial opinions on the subject.  Its in the news.  It is what it is.

Sorry Old55, I didn't realize that I posted a segment of another member's podcast.

I'll refrain from doing so in the future.

I hope PDEA continues on to try and apprehend the 'bigger wheels' in the drug trade, many Filipinos seem to want to see that from what I have read.

I was having a beer with a Filipino friend last week and he volunteered a view that the drug problem here in Philippines was 'out of control'.  I was surprised at that statement.

That will create a great opportunity for the smaller wheels. They can just fight it out in the streets until one of them becomes the next bigger wheel.
