The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate

A search for " Smart Traveler Enrollment Program" does indeed show up in many previous threads so obviously people think it is important.  If people do not know what to search for (as in US Citizens who have no idea what S.T.E.P. is) then it can't hurt to put up a recent thread on it and draw attention to the program.
