Comparing health costs in PI to back home

Over the last month or two I've been listening to the media talk about health care in First world countries, their main problem is how are they going to pay for it. In Australia we have a medicare system that is taxed out of your wages, in other countries,( I won't name them, ) they squabble about whether compulsory  health insurance pays for it or whether you pay for it, what happens if you can't pay, do you get a toe tag DNR or not?

What prompted this: The wife's family has had a rough trot this year, they were too ashamed to ask her for 30,000 Peso for medicine for her brother because he had pneumonia, we sent it over but it was to late, he died. Then last week her other brother came unstuck on a motorbike fracturing his skull, it took two days before she was notified, same reason, too ashamed to ask for money, money was transferred over, cheaper to do that than pay for another funeral. The hospital was still treating him and X Raying him, just not the level of care we'd expect.

Now: is the PI health approach all that different from our own health care system, ( I've had to wait hours for medical attention here in Aus, ) on the surface it is, but dig a little, do we put our own countries medical systems on a pedestal over the PI's. The PI's have some top Doctors and nurses, I've tested them out for minor ailments, they seem to know what their doing. As for major ailments, don't forget most are trained in First world countries, but like back home, if you haven't got the upfront money, take two aspros and come back in a week and we'll try and get a specialist that accepts medicare to see you.

Expats: what's your honest opinion of the PI"s health care over First world health countries?

I would use the same words you used:

But I am not comfortable using them for major problems.  That said, if you get in a bind here then the local health care is all you've got.  Cross your fingers and pray.

Comparing that to first world countries, if you are in a rural area of Canada you may get a doctor who is not good enough to get a job somewhere there are great golf courses.  So its the same as here.  If you want the best health care you go where the best doctors are.  In Philippines that might mean living near St Lukes.

For the UK it is about on Par but as with most other Countries now I tend to think it is all about Money ( Or a damned expensive Insurance Cover)

Here in our Area of Negros we are fairly Luck especially in Dumaguete that has some fairly up to date Hospitals (Even the Government one to a degree, A&E (Emergency) tend now to do as in the West Do a Triage System and those that are considered in a Life threatening situation are seen First then down a scale to cuts and bruises. No it is not Perfect but I too have waited many hours in the Reception Area in the UK and in Spain so as I say it is getting just the same BUT I believe where the west is getting worse the philippines are getting better
