The US is just now letting drugs from Canada ship to States

Funny thing is, when I take a trip home to Canada I take enough generic meds back with me for personal use to last for my trip.  Generic meds here are cheaper than my "co-pay" from my employer's drug plan when I used to work in Canada.  Since I haven't got that now, and since I have to see a doctor in Canada for every prescription, and since I have no control over what he will prescribe, or the price, I just buy my meds from Generika Drugstore in Phiippines.  So far I have had no problems at the border.  I dread the day they tell me I cannot do that as the meds I use cost me about 1500 pesos a month in Generika and would cost about $1000 for a month in Canada (if I include the cost of a doctor visit to get the prescriptions).

Now I am not talking about a lot of fancy medicines.  I refer to the items that the majority of older folk are taking.  Diabetes meds (mild form, not insulin), statin drugs, blood pressure meds, and vitamins.

Not a quote of facts but I think many generic drugs come from India.  Personally if your wife hits 62 soon its time to look at the market.  Just joking my friend but could not resist. :571c66d400c8c_1(103):

Generic (Indian) or local (filipina) which do you recomend?

I was looking into purchasing a pharmacy franchise a couple months ago and I looked into all the generic drug pharmacies licenced in the Philippines.  Generika and Generics are the 2 main ones here so I concentrated on their info.  I don't have it in front of me tight now but, if I remember correctly, their stock is manufactured either in the Western world or by Western pharmaceutical companies manufacturing in the Philippines itself and also shipped for use in Western countries.  You know they aren't going to get garbage in for a Western country.  And it's all the same stock off the same line.

So based on this, can you tell us why so few Filipinos use them and prefer to stay with the High street Pharmacies, The queues  will tell you they do :89:

It goes back to just a few short years ago when the mom and pop pharmacies were selling fake generics.  The term generic got a bad name with a few high profile busts.  And, yes, several of the ones caught with the fake drugs were big name pharmacies.

There is also the thing here where the parents did something so the children do the same.  ie: Catholic Church, schools attended, where they buy their groceries, and, yes, pharmacy they use.

The US is just now letting drugs from Canada ship to States and has constant warnings about buying drugs from China,  didn't know about India.  Are the generic drugs sold in the Philippines inspected and safe, the strength and half live date accurate?  Should one use only brand name drugs from large pharmacies?  My trips are 6 months or less and I bring mine with. but will be staying much longer wife wife hits 62.  Will it be more prudent to have drugs shipped or buy locally from a source that can be trusted, which, given the shipping cost will be much less.

Generic usually refers to prescription medication whose patent protection have expired.  Other companies are therefore allowed to manufacture and sell them at a lower, more competitive price.  The replacement are new brands that are developed, advertised and sold at higher margins by the pharmaceutical companies.  Except for China, most countries maintain strict control over manufacturing. whether generic or brand name.

We purchased in the Philippines a prescription skin cream for $46.00 from Mercury.  The price in the United States by the same manufacturer is $220.00.  Identical product and packaging. The only difference is the name of the distributor.  This is known as "local market" pricing.

During cruises to Mexico, you will find 5 or more pharmacists located dockside. Within 2 hours after arrival, there are elderly Americans lined up buying their high-price heart medication at discount prices.  You are permitted to bring back a 90 days supply.  I am sure some buy more than that.  Americans travel to Canada with their prescriptions for the same reason.

The C.E.O.s of Berkshire Hathaway, Amazon and J.P. Morgan have announced their plan to tackle the high cost of healthcare.  The first move is from Warren Buffet.  He purchased a substantial interest in a highly successful Israeli generic drugs manufacturing company.  I suspect they will start by offering generic drugs to their employees.  The three have a combined workforce of over 500,000 plus employee families.

And, hopefully this will bring the foreign manufacturers to legally sell in US
