  2. Are you there to see what wants doing or are you being told what wants doing. Gets a few quotes by asking around then go and price everything they are saying you want yourself , it’s surprising how a couple of tins of paint plus the odd tin sheet can solve the problem .

  5. Almost impossible to answer your question because the condition could be anywhere from a few pin holes causing leaks, to a roof that needs to be completely replaced. Cost of corrugated metal commonly used here for roofing runs about 500 peso per square meter. You should be aware that you will be taken advantage of it you try to take care of this remotely. You could very well end up paying for a brand new roof and actually be buying a coat of paint.

  7. I tried that once. I hid the bottle so my wife would not use it for cooking. I'm still looking for it.

  8. Not a good idea to have wooden trusses, if they rot or get infected you are screwed. If it's that bad it's going to cost you more than a few thousand $$$s. Get the roof inspected by qualified tradesmen. I'm saying qualified very lightly. Cost, get at least 3 estimates. Good luck.

  10. Suggest you make an extended visit moving around the islands before you make a permanent move. Bohol is nice, as is Southern Leyte and Cebu outside of Cebu City. I like Bantayan island just off Cebu but there's thousands of places waiting to find you. Many nice single ladies especially outside major cities. You understand the simple precautions to take meeting potential long term partners?

  15. We installed 2 new metal roofs about 9 months ago, with steel beams. Bother were about 200sq ft. and cost around $2,000 each - materials and labour. We bought all materials so that helped keep the costs down. There are always variables but that will give you a ballpark figure I think. Repairs are fine but it may simply be a case of papering over the cracks, especially if the trusses are wooden - maybe replacing will be the better long-term option.

  16. Just a word of advice to all, unless your partner is paying tax to the PI government, forget mentioning any Suri-Suri activity or any-way they made a living. Don't forget a burocrate has to justify his employment and it will come back to bite you at the least expected time.

  17. Wars usually are fought over resources (I want yours), religion (I hate yours), ideology (you are wrong), or some combination of those three. Long term war is bad for business, except for those who build weapons. Unless, of course, you are defeated and the "winner" rebuilds your countries infrastructure and economy.

  21. Have you considered using the Plastic corrugated roofing? We used that instead of the metal to avoid corrosion. The roof has been on 3 years now. So far the only issue is the squatters on the higher land behind us. They have thrown some really big rocks (5 pounds or more) and made a few holes. We bought extra materials and paid someone 500 peso each time to go make the repair :)

  24. After 2 marriages in the USA I made it a policy to never marry someone who insisted on getting married. Most folks in the Philippines that live together or have children together are not legally married so going along with the local norms was my way of assimilating into the culture for quite a few years.

  26. Wars where "firstworld" countries are involved is most often because of resources. Resources is the same as money. Many countries have people in leading positions that is also deeply involved in the companies that make huge profits from war. For them war is good and they dont give a damn about the people suffering. When I said war is good for business I meant that is good for some, quite often for those in power. I remember watching a documentary about a war and some people made huge money on bombing the shit out of this place. The same people made lots of money also after the war, becau

  27. Totally ridiculous in this day and age if I can't report to the UK Pension Service, that I'm still the Philippines, and still alive. We use online banking every day, for similarly 'confidential' stuff...regardless of where we are in the world. What's wrong with using a video link such as Skype ? Yes... that's me . Yes, I'm still alive, here in the Philippines, complete with Yorkshire accent, and waving my passport and drivers licence at you. How long would that take...and free of charge ? U.K. government departments, PLEASE drag yourselves into the 21st century !

  28. I never heard of sending a passport by snail mail. At least not in the last 30 years. Especially in the Philippines. Scheduled domestic flights and cargo services may be suspended in some areas, but most likely some of the domestic couriers are still able to operate, with delays. Goods still have to flow in and out. If you called a local courier, they could give you a status on their services. For International, all the big guys have dedicated cargo flights, and the embassies would be using those.

  32. Think you're right there Mike... Out of some of the quotes received back so far, I doubt a couple are even qualified lawyers! One quoting 250k for six months completion, because she, the 'lawyer' is "close to the judge"!

  33. When we was trying to get anyone to come and give us quotes it was very hard , it was either I know a friend who knows a friend and so on, what I found useful was Facebook market place, just put in there what you are looking for and that turned our quite good for us, ok we did not go with any of there silly prices but when the came to look at the job they gave us advice on what we will need or may not need that I did not think off myself. Infact I am still getting messages from suppliers from the Philippines about prices being reduced , but I will give them all a miss .

I am seriously concerned about these drug companies rushing out a vaccine to be the first to make the most money rather than the first to make the most effective vaccine.

  39. IMHO, I think to wait a little while. I've read the differences in some of the Covid vaccines and they vary on implementation and dosage. Some replicate the virus, some block the protrusion on the virus, others replicate the antibodies, and the list goes on. What nobody can tell you for sure is how long it lasts. Is it with the first method last 3 months, then the second last 2 months ...etc. To get a little clearer picture requires the vaccine to have been around for at least a year! So do you want a booster shot every 2-3 months, and probably not free. I think I would wait a little latter to

  40. Yes Jack it seems that way. However, I'm sure there are as many reasons as there are members. OMW stated his reasons clearly with a plan not for another five years. For us it was a short learning curve to move here and overall I enjoy it very much. The only real complaint I have had is traffic and parking. I visited the Philippines starting 2003 and it wasn't long I decided I wanted a home here after retirement. At that time I was thinking 8 months here and the summers at my home in the states. Shortly after that our daughter came along and when my retirement came along we realized tha

  41. That's cool, Jaybee... So you must be quite young and not concerned about this virus? Yeah... there are many health issues. This happens to be important right now. And why do you even worry when you are apparently happy and chilling out in Florida? No corona virus there, I believe? I am in the "at risk" age group and am seriously concerned. And there are many Filipinos who also are not so young as you may be? So please just think about this... You may have a chance to avoid dying by getting a vaccination. Or you may look into someone's 9 mm pistol. Take your pick...

  43. Not really scary. We have people in our building positive. There are people out there not diagnosed as positive that anyone can come in contact with. Might be different in your area but we have no choice other than to wear a mask outside or in our building common areas. Now I cant even get into 7/11 without mask and shield.
