  1. I find that the level of English spoken here in the mountains outside of Argao is limited to non existent. The locals can say Hello, how are you, where are you going and would you like to drink tuba with my friend often tagged on to the end of their sentence. I'm slowly trying to speak the language and the locals really appreciate my effort. Generally the better the education, the better their skills in speaking English.
  2. Dogs and cats are everywhere in Phils. Just be aware that if you choose Tarlac Luzon for your home town, you will need to keep a good eye on your beloved dog as that is the dog meat capital of the Philippines from what I've been told.
  3. It's not only your month to month expenses you must consider, also your inherited family's running costs. It is very hard to avoid copping the bill for the poorer members of your GF's family and you will see many comments on this forum about this subject. Also be prepared to cop medical and hospital bills for family members that fall sick or get injured. You will be made to feel like the king of the family here in Phils but you will get to pay for that place in the family.
  4. When I accompany my partner to her church, apparently the pastor makes a real nose bleed effort to deliver his sermon in English for my benefit. Otherwise it is just in bisayan
  5. Usually you will receive an e-mail with a PDF file attached. This will be your copy of the e-ticket. It will also be logged into the computer so a printed copy is handy only for your own reference and also if you need to upgrade your baggage allowance. At check in you will be asked for your passport and your booking will show up under your name under normal circumstances. Hope that helps
  6. Cash donations made to privately-led groups assisting typhoon victims remain subject to donor's tax, the Philippines' tax chief said. However, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Sixto Esquivias IV failed to provide tax rates while testifying before the Senate sub-finance committee chaired by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago. “Donations done straight to private individuals are subject to donor’s tax," Esquivias said. “Donations to government and charitable institutions are exempt." 8. Eight people were crushed to death in the Philippines as a crowd of Typhoon Haiyan survivors stormed a rice warehouse in a town near the devastated provincial capital of Tacloban, an official says. The incident in Alangalang, 17 kilometres from Tacloban, came as the situation for millions of people in parts of the Philippines ravaged by the super typhoon becomes more dire. A massive relief effort is underway after Typhoon Haiyan ripped across the province of Leyte on Friday, but bad weather and damaged infrastructure is hampering efforts to get aid to those most in need. Meanwhile, Philippines president Benigno Aquino says far fewer had likely died than had first been feared, with initial estimates put at 10,000 in Tacloban alone. "The figure right now I have is about 2,000, but this might still get higher," he told CNN. "Ten thousand, I think, is too much. There was emotional trauma involved with that particular estimate, quoting both a police official and a local government official. They were too close to the incident, they didn't have basis for it." 9. I suppose that many of those lovely places may not be so lovely anymore since ST Yolanda. Lots of nice places in Southern Cebu
  10. I thought I'd better put this out for the newbies to internet dating. There are many ladies on dating sites that will be using Super Typhoon Yolanda as a reason to plead for money from you. I saw this happen once before when Illigan Mindanao was hit by a Typhoon. Some demands for money may be authentic but many will not. You will never know unfortunately. Surf wise and safely. Only give to a reputable charity like Bruce's Organisation or the Red Cross.
  11. Well the sensationalism of all those deaths did give all the attention to Leyte to the exclusion of northern Cebu which also copped a hiding from ST Yolanda and hardly was mentioned in the news.
  12. The situation for millions of people in typhoon-ravaged parts of the Philippines is becoming dire, but the nation's president says the death toll from the disaster is likely far lower than initially feared. A massive relief effort is underway after Typhoon Haiyan ripped across the province of Leyte on Friday, but bad weather and damaged infrastructure is hampering efforts to get aid to those most in need. Aid officials and the United Nations estimates initially put the death toll at around in 10,000 Tacloban alone, but president Benigno Aquino now says it is likely to be much lower. 13. There is a telethon going on TV with huge donations coming in from large corporations and smaller ones from well meaning families. I wonder if the television company will distribute the goods themselves or if they work with an NGO like the Red Cross. There is a lot of good will going on but also opportunities for corruption.

  15. I heard a story that they put all the foreigners living in Bantayan Island in a dump truck for their well being. It must have been atrocious. We will get to know more as time goes by and emergency teams get to the stricken places
  16. All appears to be well in Argao. Towns a bit messy but intact. Mimi and I actually caught a trike into town to buy some dinner yesterday early evening after the worst had past. It was business as usual sort of
  17. I noticed while it was still not blowing too badly that the bus services were still running here in Cebu...bus services must be like the post office. I'd hate to be waiting outside for one to come along that's for sure
  18. The wind is blowing strongly here in Argao and it's only the start. We got upgraded to signal 3 so time to become concerned!!!
  19. The authorities are doing their job here in Argao. They went door to door here in Looc for mandatory evacuation. Everyone that lives on the beach must go to the evacuation center.
  20. Perhaps the other option would be to just lose some weight...only joking heheh. I find that the local shorts don't have any crotch or bum space. Sizes for the same size vary heaps. Luckily unlike Thailand, yo can at least try before you buy in the Philippines
  21. Typhoon Yolanda has definitely made the news. Its on the TV with non stop updates. We were just upgraded from SN1 to SN2 . I hope it stops getting upgraded.
  22. I did notice on TV that they are doing a lot of praying. I suppose securing loose stuff and boarding windows is only necessary as a last resort
  23. Samar, Eastern Samar signal strength 3...it has to hit in one of the poorest areas of the Philippines. Bruce will have his work cut out for him poor soul
  24. Living costs can blow out from time to time when someone in the family gets sick. Not to mention birthday parties that the foreigner always seems to pick up the tab. Living as a single person with a small place $1000 is a no brainer if you don't indulge too much in western style luxuries. Its the other costs that you can incur being in most cases the bank of the family and the bigger the family, the bigger your budget.needs to be. On the plus side, you will become a popular member of the family
  25. A US foreigner married to a Filipina and living in Cebu near Ayala was involved in an accident where the local driver of the other vehicle tried to blame the fault on the US guy. It was clearly the fault of the local but he thought that he would get off with nothing being a proud bast---. Unfortunately the policeman on site could see that it was clearly the local driver's fault and promptly took him to the police station. A rare occurrence of justice being served or do we just take for granted that we will be in the wrong regardless. I sometimes wonder what the situation would be if I had an motorcycle accident with any one of the underage bike riders I see on the road in Argao. Would a licensed rider be at fault? Hope I never get to test the theory...
