  1. You are right about seeing what I’d describe as Grinding Poverty up close and personal; it has a deep somewhat unsettling impact, but makes one also realize just how lucky one is and Most Americans are. Many of us don’t realize just how good we have it. My eyes opened really in ‘83 in Beirut and the ‘89 onward in the Philippines and other 3rd world countries. It’s humbling.
  2. Suuuurrreeee they did! Admin note. Been said many times not to link to that site. Link removed
  3. And just Where does one find this particular Barangay Gary? Asking for a friend. 😂 Of course my Asawa would filet my steak if such were to ever happen.
  4. Totally agree if that’s the case. My response was just based on the OP, which maybe I read into too much and used that ol’ bad word “assume” even, that made me at least think he already has the means to move wherever he wants when he wants. If not, yeah a year would seem be a non-starter. Now reckon I need to read the rest of the thread.
  5. Yeah you need a very long stay as noted above. I lived in what I call “ PI Lite” 2.5 yrs back in early 90’s; means I resided on the Subic base mostly, but mostly worked off base; so, had that safe haven comfort zone to escape to when wanted. Of course a very different country then in many ways. I’ve been back around 25 times since from just a few days up to 30 days, including getting married there, and I’m still not properly prepared, But we are moving back there next Spring and look forward to what should be a much better lifestyle, travel all over, etc in addition to all the Expat annoyances and frustrations. If this was your first visit as sounds, ya got a lot more to figure out, although others like you have done it. If you have wealth already or an easy way to work on line from there making significant money, then you certainly have a head start And a way to give it a 1 yr test drive. Wish you well!
  6. Shower is huge, but private. I could’ve had a party in there last time when flew Asiana...Maybe won’t fly alone next time! Also, If one ever has long or overnight layover, plenty of free lounge chairs, etc on the same upstairs level to crash on, as well as a short stay hotel. I was told it’s best to make a reservation beforehand for the hotel. If in the lounging area, bring earplugs or noise cancel headphones, because all the floor cleaning is happening after hours.
  7. I flew them several years ago from Atlanta to Korea to Philippines in Coach. Seats then were comfortable and the service was very good. I did get the sense I was a second class citizen to the Korean flight attendants in relation to the Koreans on board, especially Korean men, but again, good overall. Best treatment I’ve had overall in an Asian carrier from US to RP was in EVA, but I’m not sure they even fly or originate beyond US west coast. Was I a 747 and the arrogant Chinese businessman man was all over me with his Big ass newspaper....attendant saw this and said come with me (Oh yes!...I wish! But she did take me to the upstairs deck with more room and Great service.
  8. When mine says, "Stop Talking", then I know I crossed some imaginary red line somewhere. Usually does not get visibly angry and almost never any tampo, But THAT LOOK! Oh, that LOOK! Shiver me timbers! It feels like that Neagan guy on Walking Dead holding his wire wrapped baseball bat, looking at you just before he whacks your head. Fear!
  9. Well I reckon she went Bye Bye! Poof! Vanished! Long Gone!
  10. Well, now that I did Google it?...I cannot Unsee that!!
  11. Sounds different than Amazon in US, as many have free, albeit it Slow, shipping, Or for about $14 per month can get Mostly all free shipping Qquickly And a lot of other entertainment for "free" (not really since paying monthly) , which includes music, movies, specifically made for Amazon movies/series like "Jack Ryan" which was really a great production, like watching an 8 hour action movie that Never got old. Guess it also includes the Alexa voice service if one has the purchased speaker. Waiting on season 2. Anyway, as much as my Asawa shops on there, as well as myself sometimes, it's been a worth the price of admission I think. Rest of time she's only shopping at the super discounted clearance stores like Ross, Marshalls and TJ Maxx here. And speaking of "free", for those in US still, if you have Netflixx, then TMobile will pay your monthly bill if have service with them....we'll see how long lasts, but that's a pretty good deal since my TMobile is already way less than Verizon per month.
  12. Great info and suggestions on photos. Our son will up for renewal about the time we make the move; so, will renew here in US at the New Year and start getting the pics ready as did not know that requirement since the adult version is so easy..
  13. And pay to exit as well? Figure I'll be leaving to US up to 2x per year in addition to our planned Asia and other travel together.
  14. Any need go in person, or all by mail?....Either way works; give us an excuse to see San Fran. Also, any thought to use Consulate in Vancouver BC?....or is that even possible for US folks? Thnx. Time to start the papers. Dreaming of a Batangas vacation right now!
  15. Well, sort of a small world....I grew up in Shelby, NC not too far away from there. Was just in Asheville and Biltmore Estate last year when took wife around my old home state after retirement. Don't see posts from you since all this; so, hope all is well.
  16. For me, preying on the good will of others, manipulating, etc, Is scamming. Reminds me of the one guy in prior thread who was used for fake lymphoma, etc and paid tons of $$$....Seriously P'd me off as my Dad died of lymphoma. Then again, plenty of foreigners have done manipulation in reverse and lots of gals left high and dry here with kiddo by the "Johnny apple seeds" who "humped, dumped and ran." I'm just glad I got lucky, because the more I read here and other places, the more I realize I really Did get Very lucky and though we met somewhere else in not the best of circumstances, where she was a fish out of water, my Asawa has never wanted to be one of those scammers, but man oh man!, that could've gone a whole different and Bad direction if not. Family is relatively poor, but they've never asked for much and have always taken good care of me when there, and mom and dad always did best they could to scratch out a living. In the end, I can't blame someone there who is trying to survive for scamming. As someone said earlier, more or less, Buyer Beware!
  17. Gonna be same here as 2 of ours will be living with us and although I hope to learn as much as I can, out plan for them is to go to better schools and from my inquiries so far, those schools teach classes using English only. Living up on Caloocan now around Fairview, they don't get a lot of English. We know a good teacher there we are thinking of hiring to tutor them in meantime to get them better up to speed before we arrive. Asawa said she's going to force them to speak English in house to further that along as well, which hers too was pretty much via immersion before, and amazing how quickly she learned.
  18. Dave, just curious on the make as when I Google, it brings back La GErmania, making me think it's a division of GE (?), or is it a German made product, etc. Collecting info on appliances, etc for our move over as want to have a good kitchen both inside and out. Thanks.
  19. Must've been Hugh Hefner risen from the dead! Was he wearing pajamas and were the girls all blond? Sorry, couldn't resist, but Oh! To be Hugh back in the day.....the Playmates, the Mansion, the $$$. Then again, I only bought the magazine for the articles.
  20. Thai massage I had in Siam that a DEA guy intro’d me too in 90’s was 2 hrs long and involved lots of torquing, pulling and stretching me like a rubber band. Can’t say it was relaxing and left me sore the nxt day, but did feel better overall. Not as good a feeling as a Thai soapy , but Maybe more limber afterwards. I prefer the deep tissue Swedish massage. Found the “Lotus” nearby the Somerset and Frasier Place in Makati to be very good for that...some Big strong girls working there. Wife likes it as well.
  21. Sadly have to wonder how many times this situation repeats itself across SE Asia and across the world. For sure a very Steep uphill battle or journey. I wish you both some luck.
  22. My wife keeps telling me I've gotten Too white. Probably like UK, hard to have much color up here in the Pacific NW unless go under the lamps. Funny, she's gotten whiter too!...But she can spend one day in the sun and be a nice brown again. Looking forward to a little more natural sunshine when we move next Spring
  23. So that I understand this all correctly, the "Extension" mentioned is Only a conversion to a tourist 9A, Or is it an extension of the "privilege ".? Asking since the #3 cited on the Immigration page does not specify; so, we want to plan accordingly for our move next Spring, since converting to the 9A then starts the periodic reporting, fees, etc. I will likely be leaving for a few weeks every 6 months or so to check on our rental property, see older kids here in US and any medical needs, then returning. We were thinking Asawa would meet me in Hong Kong, etc for a "mini us only vacation" and fly back in together, but wanted have a back up plan in case that one fails due to Murphy's Law. Guess if we decide to stay permanently, I can do the military vet SRRV for around $1500. Thanks in advance.
  24. I’m late to this one, but my input...2017 we stayed at Lally and Abet Beach Resort at end of main drag in town on the bay. Nice rooms and decent veranda upstairs type restaurant for breakfast since we ate out dinners in town. If ya have money to spare, Ayala(?) built a really nice resort on private beach just north of town. Another note though is we were there also 2009 and was pristine and not Too crowded, but fast forward to 2017 and the town has far outgrown the “sewer system “ that is really sewage into the bay. We swam in clean bay water ‘09, but I dreaded wading in gray green murk to the boat in ‘17. Like so many things there, no forethought and run it into the ground. I expect someday it’ll have shut down for a bit like Boracay.
