  1. I'm not sure of your finances, but I have heard from a reliable source that there are more pesos in chickens than pigs. 250K pesos will get you started in big time chicken ranching with a contract to a big time chicken buyer then you just make sure they grow quick and do not die.

I thought about it for my wife but she thinks all those chickens stink and create too much sh**. They do. But does she think pigs don't?

  2. Dave, your handle is Hound driver. Are you pushing a grey dog across the country? Jst wondering as I drove bus and semi all over the 11 western for years.Gene
Yep almost 30 years and then retired. Actually they got ticked off and said I quit because I had only 28 and 1/2 years in but . . well I met a girl in the Philippines and .. well you know.

  3. From the Immigrant song. It seemed fitting to me:We come from the land of the ice and snow, From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow. How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore, Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords. On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore. So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins, For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

  4. Excellent read Gene about driving using the jungle rules of law. I had my share of close calls. The fact that you are still standing after 8 years of driving, especially a motorcycle is a testimony of your defensive as well as offensive driving skills. Any recommendations of a reliable auto insurance there?Respectfully -- Jake
Honestly I don't know of any reliable insurance providers here. I carry only the minium required each year. Perhaps Allstate or other international carriers can provide coverage for visitors and expats???Gene
A good friend of mine who has been in Cebu forever, it seems, tells me that Malayan Insurance, in the Fuente Circle, sells complete and total comprehensive insurance at a fair price and that they do pay claims fast and fairly. The agency he uses is called Simple Creation, (I think but I did not sign up for it myself because I am cheap. I DO trust his recommendation though so I would buy there if I needed insurance.)

  5. Makes me want to hear the rest of the story. Who owned the bike previously and how is she paying for it?I am extra curious because I am thinking of moving to the wilds of Biliran in the near future. Seen many snakes where you are? (Not the human kind.) I hate snakes but it seems there are pythons or boas or similar snakes in Biliran. Hope my dogs can keep them at bay.

  6. Update:The grass really is greener for some girls. Here is what happened since I wrote this blog.My friend found another live in girlfriend within days. She treats him well and he is quite happy with her. Only time will tell if she will go looking for greener pastures one day.The girl who left him found a European boy friend who would bring her to his hotel for sex, give her a cell phone load and jeepney fare home. That lasted a week before she realized it was going no where. Then this week she latched onto an older, wealthier, Australian man who wined and dined her, promised her the moon and gave her lots of money to be sure her family could have a nice Christmas. (More than most here can afford to give but he is just visiting). He promises to come back in January and send lots of money in the meanwhile. She is in love with him now. (This kind of Richard Gere wanna be sure makes things difficult for us ordinary folk.)The girl's roommate, the one who instigated all this, is still collecting money from a couple of foreign, Internet 'boyfriends' while she gets her physical needs met from a local boy.So it seems that everyone is getting what they deserve and the world continues to turn.

  7. Thanks for your comments and insight MrLee. I should also mention that my friend is on a pension of approximately 1,000 US a month so when he gives an "allowance" to his girlfriend it is actually 10% of what he gets AND he pays all the expenses. I mention this for anyone reading in another country who feels "Joe" wasn't giving enough and thus she may have had reason to look for a greener pasture.Let me also mention that you can never give enough to a money motivated girl. She will always assume there is more to be had, at least that is what I have noticed.

  8. I'm reminded of a story I heard years ago. A shoe wholesaler sent many, many young people to the Philippines to see if they had what it took to be great salesmen. They all came back to say the boss was crazy, no one wore shoes in the Philippines. All they wore was flip flops. Then one day a young man did not come back. He sent a letter back to the boss to say "WOW Philippines! The potential here is so great! No one has shoes yet! I will sell millions. And he founded a huge empire called ShoeMart, now known as SM Mall.Good luck with any and all of your business ventures.
