  1. "Even if fake" denotes uncertainty; "Even though fake" would have let all readers know that the author was aware. My apologies for misunderstanding your title.
  2. FALSE https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/lottery-winner-arrested-dumping-200000-manure-lawn-former-boss/ Would have been quite funny though.
  3. I would recommend the Queens Hotel for around that budget. Location close to the action (if that's where you want to be), is nice, clean, has steak restaurant, lounge, and pool. Just make sure to specify a non-smoking room in advance if you want one.
  4. When did these new notes come out? Anyone know when the previous version will have to be turned in by? I still have about 25,000 pesos or so from my trip last month and would not want them going out of circulation before I return. Thanks in advance!
  5. Laguna area is fine, looking to spend about $100 a night for accommodations as food, drink, and entertainment for that many people is going to multiply that. Also, this is just 5 days of a 27 day trip we're taking through Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.
  6. Hi all, I was hoping that someone out there could offer some suggestions on the following. Me and the Mrs will be spending a week in November to visit her family. They live in Manila and I would like to find a house outside Manila to take them that has a yard and pool. Problem is, extended family will also need to be included and it brings the number to about 18 adults and a couple kids. I've checked online (airbnb, tripadvisor, etc.) and have been quoted riiculous prices. Unfortunately, her family there is not all that good at handling the search due to various reasons, so it's falling on me and misses (both currently in USA). We need a place from November 7 until the 12th that is big enough to accommodate everyone (Filipino style), except that I need aircon in one room so I can sleep at night. It needs to have a pool and yard so as to have something fun to do doing the day. We want to be outside Manila to escape some of the pollution and traffic. I'm hoping that someone on this site can offer some suggestions and what reasonable pricing should be for 4-5 nights. I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks in advance! Bill
  7. I usually use google flights and play around with the dates to determine best airfare prices and which dates to fly. www.google.com/flights
  8. In Step 1: Import & Convert select your clip and click Advanced Settings. (File must be coming from the GoPro camera with the original file naming convention) In Advanced Settings check the "Remove Fisheye" option. Click OK. Add the clip to the Conversion List and then Convert the Clip. The fisheye effect will be removed.
  9. Yes, all of us who have ties to family in the Philippines will have to deal with loan requests for one thing or another. Unfortunately, difficult choices are sometimes required if you're going to keep such dynamics a part of your life and be able to survive it. On a lighter note (just to be humorous and in no way is this supposed to be directed at the originator), For you reading enjoyment, a funny letter (fake of course) from a Thai bargirl to her foreign boyfriend: "Dear xxx I love you & I miss you too much. 10. No need for a dish, I prefer my dog in a bun with mustard and relish!
  11. Sorry, but I tapped out after the thought of this! :cheersty: You have more willpower than I!
  12. I was just in Kuala Lumpur this past January and I have no interest in returning. Aside from almost getting myself in a jackpot of danger by trying to stop 6 locals from stomping and kicking a non-Malaysian to death in an alley just of a main road, I did not find the place at all inviting during my stay. Same for Penang ? Haven't been there yet although urban areas I'm used to and can deal. What prompted their assault ? Was it like the old Elmore James song made famous by the Allman Bros cover "{I must have} Done Somebody Wrong"? Or was it "Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places"? I like that "jackpot of danger" though, sounds like a great title for a film I must say ! I am not sure about Penang as I haven't been there before. I am not sure as to the reason behind the assault as I was not present when it initiated. Being the type of person that I am (retired law enforcement), I sometimes tend to jump into a situation when I see something so obviously one sided even though I don't have a dog in the fight. Whatever the person did, they probably ended up dead or at least some serious brain damage from the repeated kicks to the head while he was down. As I couldn't stand around and watch this any longer, I did not stick around to know the outcome. Because this wouldn't happen anywhere in the world. Malaysia is such a country of contrasts. KL is boring as hell yes, but there's so many better places. No I wouldn't retire there, but it is a country well worth spending more than a month in if you understand and respect how things work there. Anywhere there's a large population of ethnic Chinese you'll have a great time and can be yourself generally speaking. Outside of that if you are sensitive to local beliefs, laws, traditions you'll get along just fine. Some of the best food in the world too if you can live without pig products. Diving, and those picture postcard tropical dream areas are highlights. I may be a little biased as I speak relatively fluent Bahasa Malaysia and Indonesia and a little Mandarin. Sure, it happens just about anywhere in the world and it often does. I just used that as an icing on the cake example of why I have no interest in returning. There were many more reasons, being a predominately Muslim country, drinking is very expensive and I enjoy my cocktails. I also just didn't feel as comfortable overall as I prefer. Being what I consider fairly well traveled (20+ countries), Malaysia was the only one that I have no interest in going back to and I usually like returning multiple times. Heck, in the past two years alone, I've made three return trips to the Philippines and four to Thailand. Having done so, I've decided that my next trip will be solely spent in the Philippines as I've come to prefer it over Thailand mainly because of the ease of communication since I don't have a knack for languages. Now, going back to the original posting. I personally think that you based on what you are looking for, you are better off staying in Thailand and if finding a nice Filipina for a long term relationship is your end goal, look for one there that's an OFW (Overseas Foreign Worker).

  14. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It looks like I'll end us going with Private Internet Service as the online reviews are high as well.
  15. As the title says, I am looking for a good VPN service. I want a something that I can pay a monthly membership fee for that will allow me to surf privately here in the states and will also allow me to "appear" to be in the U.S. when I am traveling abroad since some sites can't be accessed due to location. I thought I remember reading about it on this site before, but a search revealed nothing. Thanks! :cheersty:
  16. If you are running an online business, you may wish to add reliable internet service to your list as that is not a given in much of the Philippines.
  17. I am not talking about having to live on less, I'm talking about having more respect for those who have the ability to live on less. Meaning that whether you earn $10,000 a month or $2,000 if you're able to live off if only $1,000 a month and still enjoy quality of life one desires; it deserves respect in my eyes. I don't consider having disposable income necessarily as "lucky". I earn what is considered to be a very good income here in the U.S. I however, live a modest, but good life socking away as much money as I can into savings and investments. Why? So that when I decide to retire I can be one of the supposed "lucky" ones or I hope anyway. :cheersty:
  18. I personally have far more respect for those that are living on less and enjoying their lives than those that "need" far more to "survive", but that's just me.
  19. I saw this the other day online and for some reason found it a bit amusing. :hystery: GUN HAPPY PHILIPPINE POLICE WARNED Acting National Police Chief Leonardo Espina has warned that police in the Philippines who fire their guns during normally raucous celebrations will lose their jobs. Thunderous fireworks and gunfire normally leave communities shrouded in smog and gun smoke, and result in hundreds of injuries every year, including even deaths, some due to stray bullets. Since the New Year celebration began Dec. 21 more than 160 people have been injured. Read more: http://www.pekintimes.com/article/20141231/News/141239864#ixzz3NfIs1WYM

  21. I'm not sure about other countries, but most insurance companies here in the United States don't cover lost or stolen currency no matter the amount. They will just tell you "Sorry for your loss, you should have carried travelers checks instead.". :1 (103):
  22. 2,000 pesos per month living expenses? That's a little under $45 US 75,000 Pesos about $1,675 US Moving and settling expenses & 225,000 pesos savings is about $5,000 US. No way I'd attempt that.
