  3. I had to teach my wife how to use a can opener - I don't allow my good Sabatier knives to open cans (regardless of the safety issues). She won't use the porcelain dishes. She says she is scared of breaking them... but she serves my food on them, and she washes them... so why not use them herself? ...don't argue ha ha. It took her a while to start using my good cookware, but once she got over her fear of hurting them, she realized how nice they are to cook with. (All my kitchenware is older than she is ha ha)She did quickly learn to appreciate good sheets - I should have brought more. She
  4. Thanks all. I would buy thinks like deodorant, but if I already a stash, why not thrown them it. Glad for the confirmation about sheets and towels. I haven't seen any quality stuff in SBMA. I don't know how shipping BB boxes is priced. I have a pretty good stash of just-in-case food back in Oregon. I can donate this to a food bank or find out what it would cost to send in the boxes. I have a 38 inch waist, not exactly obese, but in 3 months I haven't found a single belt here I can get around my middle. Also surprised that it's almost impossible to find a decent pocket knife here that i
  5. I'm a single 68 year old man moving to the Subic area in July. I know bringing the least amount of junk with me is wise, but that said, I see no reason not to ship some good stuff I might want and which might be hard to find here. So here's my possible balikbayan box list - what do you think? Kitchen - 220 Volts Knives, utensils Blender Few stainless pans Coffee grinder & maker Glasses Clothes Shirts Hats Shoes Jackets Shorts Motorcycle boots Books (not kindle available ) Household Sheets, towels Pens, office supplies Pocket knives Food (stuff I already have) Canned

  8. After 4 visits to the Phils, I'll be moving to Dumaguete in September and looking for a rental in Valencia. At a minimum it looks like a great first base.
  9. Laughing my ass off. This is all I've been doing every day for the last month. I'm limiting myself to a 10 by 10 storage locker, a third of which is filled with books. Sold guitars, the chainsaw, art, computers, tools I've had for 40 years, matchbook collection, my kayak, camping gear, kitchen stuff. Only the vision of a new unburdened life keeps me going. Let's see if I can show you my garage...
  10. Last November I visited Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali and the Phils (hiding in Sabang Beach) :-) Like the boll weevil song, lookin' for a home.
  11. Thank all. Any suggestions for decent, inexpensive Hotel in Cebu? Your favorite bars and restaurants? How does CDO compare with Dumaguete? Mike
  12. Hi all - new member so please excuse any goof-ups. I'll be making my second exploration trip to Cebu & Duma in October, plan to move there next year. I'd love to know about any meetups in October. Thanks
  13. From reading this and other forums I have the feeling that Cebu maybe bigger than what I want, but I've gotten good impressions about Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro. I'd like to find a town large enough to have a university but small enough to still be friendly and not mobbed. Your suggestions welcome. Mike
  14. Hi Mike & CDO people, I'll be visiting the Philippines for the second time this October in anticipation of moving there next year. I read some very positive reports about Cagayan de Oro and plan to spend a week there. Any introductions will be warmly welcomed. Mike
  15. Hello all - I enjoyed my first trip last November so much I'm coming back this October to scout possible places to live. At first just looking for a home base from which to explore. I'd love to hear from other travelers or established expats who would enjoy sharing experiences, advice, wrong turns, right turns, etc. Anybody play bluegrass? Cheers - Mike
