  5. Philippines to query Saudis on maids 'ban'The Philippines is to ask for clarification from Saudi Arabia after it announced it would stop granting work permits for Filipino domestic staff, President Benigno Aquino's spokesman said Thursday.*Philippines officials will also look for other markets for workers in the event that the freeze, announced in Riyadh on Wednesday, is put into full effect, Aquino spokesman Edwin Lacierda told a news conference.Saudi authorities announced the new policy, which also affects maids from Indonesia, after failing to agree on hiring conditions imposed by the Asian countries.Labour Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz "is sending a labour attache to Saudi Arabia to verify these things", Lacierda said. Some 1.3 million Filipinos work in Saudi Arabia, a key market for the nine million-strong overseas-based Filipino work force. There had been rising concern in Manila that the dispute could impact on the economy of the Philippines, where a fifth of the workforce is jobless or looking for more work."There are other countries that would be ready to absorb those that cannot be accommodated by Saudi Arabia, so the Secretary of Labour already anticipated that," Lacierda said. However he declined to provide details, saying Baldoz was set to issue a formal statement later Thursday. The Aquino government had its demand for higher pay and greater protection for its women workers turned down by Saudi Arabia in May.Rights groups say millions of mostly Asian domestic workers are regularly exposed to physical and financial abuse in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states due to poor or non-existent labour laws.
  6. Saudi bans domestic workers from Indonesia, PhilippinesSaudi Arabia announced Wednesday it would stop granting work permits to domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines, following hiring conditions imposed by the Asian countries.*The ministry of labour said it would "stop issuing work visas to bring domestic workers from Indonesia and the Philippines, effective from Saturday" due to "the terms of recruitment announced by the two countries," according to a statement carried by state news agency SPA."The ministry's decision coincides with its great efforts to open new channels to bring domestic workers from other sources," said the statement in English quoting the ministry's spokesman Hattab bin Saleh al-Anzi.Last week Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono denounced the beheading in Saudi Arabia of an Indonesian maid and accused Riyadh of breaking the "norms and manners" of international relations. His comments signalled Indonesia's growing anger over the treatment of its manual labourers in the Gulf countries, after a spate of cases of abuse and killings.Ruyati binti Sapubi, 54, was beheaded on June 18 after she was convicted of killing her Saudi employer, prompting Indonesia to recall its ambassador in Saudi Arabia for "consultations."Indonesia also announced a moratorium on sending migrant workers to Saudi Arabia, where hundreds of thousands of Indonesians toil as maids and labourers.Saudi Arabia and the Philippines have also clashed over the working conditions of Filipina domestic workers in the oil-rich kingdom.Earlier this year the Philippines asked Saudi Arabia to guarantee higher pay for Filipina housemaids but the request was turned down. The Philippines demanded $400 in monthly wages for for housemaids but Saudi authorities offered a base monthly salary of $210, Filipino labour official Carlos Cao had told AFP in Manila in May.Manila had also demanded proof that that Saudi households employing Filipina housemaids would pay and provide humane working conditions.Rights groups say millions of mostly Asian domestic workers are regularly exposed to physical and financial abuse in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states due to poor or absent labour laws.

  19. 10 things that make PH ugly this is from todays inquirer so do you agree or disagree1. Billboards from hell, the scourge of ad tarps—In just less than a decade, the urban landscape has been “uglified” by these gigantic outdoor ads that have defied regulation. Many times they have brought death and injury to people and destruction to property. Who would like to be in a place like that?2. Garbage, garbage, garbage on the streets, in the creeks, rivers, seas and shorelines—Ugly, smelly and unsanitary, they have been a big cause of pollution, flooding, disease. Year in and year out we blame garbage for our flooding woes but…3. “Spaghetti” cables—Look up and see snarled power and phone cables looking like cobwebs hanging on the Philippine sky. They’re not only ugly, they’re also dangerous when they became too heavy and fall because of their sheer weight.4. Sticky matter left behind by spitters and nosepickers—Footbridges, overpasses, sidewalks, churchyards, markets and waiting sheds have lots of these shimmering blobs.5. Buildings in a state of disrepair or with ugly architecture—Metro Manila has lots of these unsightly neglected structures that should be condemned and demolished. Many cities in the world have that certain look and feel that the design of their buildings, homes and other structures provide. We have not evolved our own look.6. Potholes galore, bad roads.7. Dirty toilets.8. Untrimmed trees, neglected public parks and gardens.9. Traffic and too many unregulated public vehicles, plus the noise and pollution they make.10. Extreme poverty—This is not to say that the poor and homeless are ugly. It is poverty that is deathly ugly.full story here http://opinion.inqui...at-make-PH-ugly

  24. so are the people of the Philippines self- bashers? here is a few line from an article in todays daily inquirerSelf-bashers “We have been belittling ourselves and have become the worst self-bashers in the world,” De Leon told the symposium organized by the Heritage and Arts Academies of the Philippines Inc.He traced this behavior to a “cult of smallness,” which he attributed to more than three centuries of colonization during which Filipinos had been told that their culture was “inferior.”“As a result, we have adopted the smallest in our country as our national symbols—the smallest fish, the maya (among the smallest birds), the sampaguita (one of the smallest flowers), and the bahay kubo (nipa hut),” De Leon said.Unhappy with brown “So we tend to regard anything Filipino-made to be poor in quality and anything foreign or ‘stateside’ to be better,” he said. Many Filipinos also are unhappy with their brown skin, making the Philippines the biggest market for skin whiteners, De Leon said.Celebrating defeats He also said Filipinos celebrate defeats, instead of triumphs, a practice which distorted national consciousness.“With this disease, we have been celebrating our defeats such as the fall of Bataan and Corregidor. We also have a statue of our national hero, Rizal, which shows him with hands tied and almost falling to the ground after being executed (on orders of Spanish colonial officials),” he said.full article here http://newsinfo.inqu...gged-in-PH-woes
  25. MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has rejected a proposal by recruitment agencies to suspend the implementation of the law providing insurance coverage for overseas Filipino workers, which since its implementation this month has resulted in a 52 percent drop in deployments abroad, POEA Administrator Jennifer Manalili said Friday. In an interview with Radyo Inquirer’s Marvin Javier and Hannah Señeres on their program “Bantay ng OFW,” Manalili said this was the decision reached by the governing board of the POEA Thursday, a day after representatives of recruitment agencies and the Insurance Commission met to discuss concerns about Republic Act 8042, which took effect last November 8.
