  1. I need to find somewhere in Manila where I can upload two 10GB video files to Hightail so that my clients can download them from there. My PLDT DSL connection at home is supposed to give me a 0.7Mbps upload speed but the files take about 24 hours to upload about 2-3GB then they stall and don't do anything (I think PLDT must have a cap on the uploads). I've been trying without success for more than a week now. So I need to find somewhere - maybe an upmarket internet cafe - with a very fast fiber connection where I can upload these files to Hightail. I don't mind paying for the service as long as the cost is reasonable. Anyone know of such a place anywhere in or close to Metro Manila? I would take the files there on an external hard drive. I live just outside of Metro Manila and we don't have any fiber near here, otherwise I would upgrade my own service.
  2. What experience do people out in the provinces rate their Internet access? Any suggestions for planning? I am very computer dependent (probably a bad thing). Do Roku streaming devices work? How about Apple TV or Amazon Fire? Can you stream live games (such as US NFL or MSL leagues)? Just trying to get my head around what I am going to be in store for. Last fall I was in Cebu City and had no trouble steaming in a Hotel, but then from a hotel out in Danao streaming was impossible. It is hit and miss? Are satellite Internet providers available?
  3. I live in a rural area and my only option for internet is SmartBro mobile internet. At times my bandwidth is measured in KB rather than MB. I keep myself busy in my retirement by developing Android mobile phone applications and sometimes have to download very large files (ie 500MB). When I lived in Las Vegas and had a 10 MB DSL internet the download would be measured in minutes. Here in the provinces where my SmartBro bandwidth sometimes is measured in KB a large file download can take hours. Many times I have started a large download (ie 500MB) before going to bed only to wake up in the morning to find out that after 400MB was downloaded the SmartBro internet connection dropped while I was sleeping. It is really frustrating because when it happens I have to restart the download from scratch the next night. Well I found a product called IDM (internet download manager) that is a real lifesaver. The most important feature of IDM is the ability to restart the download from the point where the download failed. It has many other bells and whistles too. It gives you the actual real time download speed (ie 45KB per sec), percentage of the file that has been downloaded, time remaining, etc. With SmartBro you can have a slow connection and if you disconnect and reconnect your Wi-Fi you may get a connection that is 5 times faster than the previous one so the ability to see what is happening is real time is important. If I start a download and the transfer rate is slow (ie 20kb per second) I just disconnect and reconnect my SmartBro Wi-Fi connection until I get a faster connection and restart the download. You can download the IDM for free and try it for 30 days. It's cheap to buy at 30 USD and it may save you a lot of grey hairs.
  4. One major thing internet dating might be good for, is to learn what their use of certain words might be. One term which neither my wife nor I knew the meaning of was "having had a boyfriend" or any form thereof. No to many years ago a Filipina asked my wife if she ever had a boyfriend before me and she did not know that it meant had sex with a man before me. Later on asking many ladies questions, I came upon that term and found out what was said to be the common meaning of it, since many ladies said it meant having had sex, yet I do not know if that would be the common meaning of it all over the Philippines, so be aware that if a girl tells you she had a boyfriend before, that might mean she had a sexual partner before. Another common term is suitor and that just means someone who was interested in a lady but had not necessarily dated them, yet depending on whether in a city or a province, could have meant they went out on a date. Any other terms any of you have come across which might be relevant for people new to internet dating to learn, or any corrections in what I wrote above?
