I Need Advice - Fight It Or Not?

I was recently shown a post on a forum which attacked our business and our web site. See below -“A very popular forum xxxxxxxxxx.com was run by a convict from US, who has now scammed millions of pesos from newbies in Cebu, the person, XXXXXXX, who has a history of scamming in US and PH is now on the run. His gate keepers are trying to suppress his whereabouts and his sister sites like www.Denial of service Is run by his cohorts. Please do not deal with any of these sites or the persons.”The post was on a site whose address included the words “........sexguide” in it’s title. I was outraged and joined the forum to protect my name and put right the blatant mistruths;_· That I am a scammer – Neither I nor my wife have ever scammed anyone in our lives. Some people say our price is too high, others say it is too low; but most agree that the service provided matches the price.· That my site is a “sister” site – our business is completely independent of any of the forums on which we post. Banners may appear but they are not paid advertisements. We are no one’s “sister” site.· That I am trying to “suppress” his whereabouts – we have no idea where this man is.My question is – do we fight, post on that forum and defend our name OR do we just let the thing die a death as it seems to be doing there?I am very naive about the “power” of the internet and how it really works. Someone told me that if I didn’t repute the post that whenever someone “googled” our business name that post would appear.I am open to all suggestions and will listen to them all, but I don’t guarantee to take your advice.

I would write to the webmaster/owner of the site stating my case and request that the offending part of the post is removed immediately. It needs to be done as soon as possible so that the search engine robots do not pick it up and store it.I do have considerable experience with the internet and how the search engines work. Your "someone" is correctSomeone told me that if I didn’t repute the post that whenever someone “googled” our business name that post would appear. not only Google but all search engines could pick it up....

Paul, sorry to hear that you have been smeared in this deplorable mess. I can't give advice on the legalities of what this site is doing but I have known you for over a year and have used your services from before I moved here and can personally attest to your honesty and integrity. I hope it dies the speedy and unceremonious death it deserves.

I agree Paul, get in tough with the owner of the site or sites. If they refuse, then you can try going to their hosting company depending where it's hosted. If you need any help, please feel free to PM me and I'll see what I can provide you.If the website that it's posted on, is highly active, then the spiders will index it within a few hours to a day. I've seen posts show up in google searches a few hours after posting.

These can be removed through google, but it's a little tricky process once the original content has either been changed or deleted.

Paul, I couldn't say it any better than those above have already done! This is something that you need to do quickly and make sure that the site owner carries it out quickly as well.

Place the name of your company or website on Googgle and other search engines plus the words "scam" or "fraud" and click. Usually if there is only one disgruntled person writing, there will be no information. The search engines have an adjudication process to get it removed. I think you also have the right to attach a counter comment or your side of the story.

Fight it all the way Paul. The members of this forum know you are of the highest integrity and that you run a respectable business. You have our support. It's a shame you are getting smeared because of this expat's dealings. I hope you get this cleared up and that your name and business does not suffer any ill effects.

Paul, We have sought your advice a few times over the years, always appreciated your input. I can only concur with all those ahead of me on this topic and add that I was saddened to see your business name crop up there as the marksman seems to have moved from a sniper rifle to a shotgun and the aim is way off in your case. There is no reason that the hunt that is underway all around other forums should be broadened to the point of causing you to defend yourself and your years of positive contributions to the expat community over the crimes of others. One poster recommended contacting the site owner... I have seen that done recently and successfully as there was a series of similar smears against a guy whose name starts with a "G" then I saw a rebuttal message that calmly contradicted the references to his name and next time I visited, all references were gone... I hope it is that easy for you so the bad info is gone completely, not just off search engine radars. Good luck in your efforts!!
