jon1 Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 (edited) For a good read about the Bataan Death March and the rescue of the POWs in Cabanatuan, check out "Ghost Soldiers, The epic account of World War II's greatest rescue mission". That mission was also the premise for the movie "The Great Raid". You get both perspectives in the book and it is truly heart breaking to read the conditions and treatment that our soldiers and the filipinos had to endure under the Japanese occupation. Dougbert Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Haven't seen that one--will keep an eye out for it on TCM or AMC. Sometimes they'll do a marathon of John Wayne movies or war movies. I'm currently reading "Lapham's Raiders" which is one man's account of guerrilla activities in the central plain of Luzon. Lapham and some others were sent out of Bataan before the complete collapse and managed to survive and provide some useful service to the locals as well as the larger war effort (mostly intelligence until late 44-early 45 when the Americans did finally return). Interesting, but probably only if you're a war history buff. My neighbor here in CA was stationed in Germany in the 60s at a US listening post monitoring Soviet military radio intercepts. He was a language expert. As it turns out, his father was doing the same thing in the Pacific during WWII and followed a few days behind the invading troops in the Philippines. And if you're a reader who enjoys an intellectually interesting read, try Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. It's a novel, but has a good portion of the story set in the Philippines before, during, and after the war. Fiction, but set in a well-rendered historical context.
