OnMyWay Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I have been downloading a few e-books on Amazon related to retirement in the Philippines, or other Philippines topics. Most are written by expats, and my impression of most of the books is that they are poorly written and very amateurish. Doesn’t everybody have a spell checker these days? (Is amateurish a word?) So be it, I still found some useful information in each of them, albeit, always taken with a grain of salt! Amazon recommended a book, and after I sampled it, I downloaded the full version. The book is titled “Happier Than a Billionaire: Quitting My Job, Moving to Costa Rica, and Living the Zero Hour Work Week”. I enjoyed the book and much of it parallels the Philippines expat experiences I have read about here on the forum, so I thought I would recommend it to you all. It is only $2.99 for the Kindle version The author and her husband decided to abandon the rat race and move to Costa Rica while in their late 30s. She is a good writer and the book is an easy read. She comically recalls their experiences of the first year, doing all the things we talk about here: Visa runs, driving, bugs, cost of living, food, government bureaucracy, etc., etc. I’m certain that she has embellished quite a bit, but it is still enjoyable to read and entertaining. She also discusses all the benefits they have experienced: less stress, better eating / health, and learning to enjoy the small things in life again. If you decide to try it, I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the heads up on "Happier than a Billionaire". I will put that on my wish list, along with getting a Kindle. I was wondering if you could download more books while in the Philippines? Good question about downloading in Philippines. I assumed I would be able to because I thought I remembered that some members mentioned having them in Phils. Can somebody answer this? I love my Kindle Touch. One thing I really like is that it can be read perfectly in bright sunlight, at any angle. The screen technology used is very cool! I believe LordBlackNail is an avid E-reader. In the meantime, I am gathering more books to my wishlist about Philippines in general. For example, since I'm retired USN I would love to have this collection: http://www.amazon.co...41842849&rnid=9
MikeB Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Good question about downloading in Philippines. I assumed I would be able to because I thought I remembered that some members mentioned having them in Phils. Can somebody answer this? I have an Android tablet and the "built-in" Google app for buying books does not work here. It would probably work with VPN, I'll try later. The Amazon marketplace for buying books and music works fine, I use that.
