Tukaram (Tim) Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 :tiphat: Ok, I am in the process of packing my crap to move to Panay. Most of my stuff is packed and I am down to the weird stuff... I get to my hats.... I have 3 hat boxes, with a little packing I can easily pack all my fedoras in them (8 or 10?). Anyway the problem comes when I put them in the BB box (23x17x27 inches). They take about half the box. This means at $120 USD per BB box it will cost about $50 to ship my hats. I will probably wear the linen and straw hats but will I ever wear my felt hats again? Is it worth taking them? I really love my hats, you know. Then again, what about my suit? Where the hell am I ever going to wear a suit & tie again? Ohhhh the tough choices.... You don't think about these things until you actually get close to finish packing Actually I won't be packing all of them. I packed 8 or 10 but kept out 3 of my favorites to wear while waiting for my BB boxes to arrive. :tiphat:

JJReyes Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 How many hats do you really need? When my wife and I took our two sons on a round the world trip for a year, the rule was three sets of clothes - one you were wearing, another that needed washing and the third in reserve. We lived in a small European RV for seven months. If anything got lost or needed replacement, we bought one. The minimalist policy remains. My wife and I can travel with one suitcase between the two of us. Most women will tell you it's impossible. The hat you are wearing in the photograph looks really nice. Get rid of the others. Buy a new one if it gets lost.
Classic Dry Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Chuck 'em all out, along with the suit ! You'll never wear them. Get a hat you can stuff in your pocket.
JJReyes Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I forgot about the suits. The formal attire in the Philippines is Barong Tagalog. For Hawaii, I do keep one suit for funerals. Haven't used it in years. Hawaii is so beautiful, people here refuse to die. It's a local joke. The other is wearing a suit means you committed a crime and that you are on your way to a court hearing.
Mike S Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 They do have some straw and leather cowboy hats here but nothing like you are used to in Texas .... and definitely no xxx beaver (no Jake not that kind of xxx beaver ... you dirty ol' man .... :hystery: ) ..... the next thing is gonna be size ..... Filipinos have small heads and you can't find a decent sized hat to wear ..... I love my Boonie hats but it took me 4 years to finally find one that fit good (and no fat-heat comments .... :mocking: .... my head ain't that big) ..... hats here go by S .. M .. L ..... and they ALL tend to be on the smaller sizes even the Large ..... so you may want to bring what you can ...... OH ... and I tried to have some made here but no luck finding someone who could ..... especially the "newsboy" hats .... better known as "golfing hats" ....
Jollygoodfellow Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Why cant you put the hats inside each other then pack it with paper. I'm sure they will go back into shape but then again, what would l know about hats? :tiphat:
Popular Post Tukaram (Tim) Posted January 12, 2013 Author Popular Post Posted January 12, 2013 I have to use hat boxes because they are nice felt hats, but I can stack them in the 3 boxes. But, yes I know I probably never wear my good wool felt hats anymore (hat style - think 1940's movie star, not gangster). When I lived in Hawaii I wore a suit to church - but no vest. Since I have not gone to church since Hawaii (1992) that won't be a concern. After 2 years in San Diego and 2 years in Pearl Harbor when I came back to Texas I realized I did not own a pair of long pants anymore! So I really probably don't need to take any of my felts but I love my fedoras :tiphat: But the good news is that I am getting close to finishing up my packing. That is why I am down to hats, and various hobby supplies... and making sure all important files are on both computers. Kitchen, DVD's, clothes, magic tricks (tons), all packed. I will be taking my favorite 3 linen fedoras with me in my suitcase. And this is for a retirement move - not vacation. SO I guess it would be better to take too much and dump stuff then to get there and wish I had something. When women get depressed they buy new shoes... I buy a new hat!
Mike S Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 (hat style - think 1940's movie star, not gangster) See how easily we can stereo type .....
