Popular Post Bruce Posted January 20, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 20, 2013 It all gets down to attitudes. Since 'you' look at everything from a western view and your logic and deductive reasoning AND your problem solving skills (should) be light years ahead of the average Pinoy..... it is easy to end up frustrated in your efforts to 'help and improve' things. This is where most westerners get angry and go home due to their views of the 'stupid' way things are done in Phils. But if you can acceopt the Pinoy as he is and maybe offer some help without taking it personally when your ideas do not work, then you may have a future in Phils. Attitude. If you think everyone around you is stupid... then you are doomed to fail. With my charity efforts, I look 'stupid' right in the eyes every day. I can't change it on the wholesale level. ALL I can do is perhaps make things a 'little' better for an individual for a short time. Some food, some medicine and I pay some school fees. Not to produce a doctor or lawyer in the ends, but to maybe get through the 6th grade and being able to read and write and function at a basic level in their society. I compromise. I accept. I accept that I can not change "them" and as such, I plan to stay for a long time..... Attitude! In reading posts... if you see a post like 'What a funny thing I saw today" as compared to "I saw a stupid A*****e try to build a wood wall that I could build in 2 hours and it took him 3 days!!!!!!!!!!! Well both posts may be about the same thing, but by differing attitudes of the viewer. What the westerner sees is a long drawn out process to build a simple wall that should take 2 hours. What a Pinoy thinks is that I am paid 300p a day and I need to feed my family and I can work this wall for 3 days to get 900p to feed my family. So who is wrong? Attitude! Accept 'their' ways and be happy, or be critical and be angry all the time.

Accept 'their' ways and be happy, or be critical and be angry all the time. A very well written perspective of street level life of a typical Pinoy. Western attitudes simply cannot move mountains of poverty overnight. What little is offered, they will treasure the moment and treat you like their family. Most of us have never experience going to bed starving each and every day. You don't have to be religious to experience the joy of giving. Well done Bruce -- Jake

Forum Support Popular Post Old55 Posted January 20, 2013 Forum Support Popular Post Posted January 20, 2013 We have gone back and forth on living in Philippines over the years. In 1999 we started seriously looking at property in Philippines thinking we would move over full time. We now have boys in school and a good life here in the States. After many visits both my wife and I have decided NOT to move to Philippines full time. The main issue is raising children here in the States has many advantages over Philippines. As much as we both love the Philippines and Filipinos living there full time would not be our choice. Pollution, corruption, safety health care, lack of basic infrastructure and other issues are some of the reasons. Living here and visiting Philippines works for us. Recently my wife has experienced a chronic health problem. We once more considered the merits of living in the Metro Cebu City area but realized overall that she would be best served living here.
i am bob Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Some return home for family reasons. It is hard to raise children in the Philippines. Others will return home because of health reasons - they can get better care at home... Sometimes. And others might return for financial reasons... Perhaps they don't have the funds to support their loved ones or even to help their extended families get ahead. I know my Special Someone is interested in looking into coming to Canada for a couple years to teach - so she can not only experience Canada but also to experience teaching at a different pace and variety than she would be looking at in the Philippines. But I think the biggest reason people return home is for the reason that Bruce and a few others mentioned above - that they can't adapt to the Filipino way of life. It's not for everybody...
Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted January 20, 2013 Popular Post Posted January 20, 2013 I have seen a lot of people return to their home country after giving the Philippines a fair go. Unfortunately, it is the norm for people who do that to drop off the radar, In general they tend to lose interest in the Philippines, stop posting in forums, stop communicating etc. It means there is no realistic way to see the other side portrayed except through anecdotal evidence such as I just gave here.

Bruce ..... this post should be required reading for every foreigner who is coming to live or is thinking of coming to live here ....... just a few days ago I saw the "ugly American" at work again in the mall ...... bitching about how his burger wasn't cooked to his liking in MacDoo's ...... (hummmmm .... I didn't know they cooked burgers to order there ..... but what do I know) ..... he takes it back and instead of checking it there at the counter he brings it back to the table to his buddy and then checks it ..... bitching again about how stupid these people are as it is cooked the same way as before (and it will be cooked just like that form now on ..... so get over it) ..... throws it down on the table like some small child ..... my first reactions was to tell him to take his fat-ass back to the US of A where he can pay $5.00 for the same burger and if he pitches a bitch there someone will deck him ...... which is what he needs ..... Incidentally I have been eating burgers there for the past 5 years once almost EVERY week and I have NEVER found a burger that has needed to be returned ...... but then I don't feel superior to the people working there and have to show my ass in front of everyone ..... :bash: ....... :cheersty:
