i am bob Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Movies... I used to get kicked out of the theatre all the time for laughing so loud!!! I finally had to stop going to Horror Movies. Yup! Most of them are so poorly acted or the effects are so bad that I can't help myself!!! I found that, when going to the cinema and wanting to impress an intellectual date (or at least somebody who does not epitomize a "blonde joke"), the best shows were the old black and white 1940s / 50s films. Bogie always did something for the "dames" I was with... Mr Grant even had the modern girls swooning.. And a younger Boris Karloff was actually quite dashing and would still scare my date into wrapping her arms around me for protection. For those not familiar with Mr Karloff, think of Frankenstein... No? How about that old North American classic and the original "The Grinch who Stole Christmas"? He would be that dashing voice of the narrator. But once I come to the Philippines, will all this be relegated to the big screen monitor? Nothing beats the old soft seats and large dark space as the theatre for this vogue film. Is there a selection of "Art House" or "Classic film" theatres in any of the cities? Anywhere that shows other options for films? Sure there are always the big budget American Films but... And to add to all this, is there much of a Filipino Film Industry or is the only basis of entertainment locally found on the Idiot Box only?
Bruce Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 The term idiot box fits well with Pinoy TV. Similar to Mexican TV... but worst. The Pinoy's have a word for the acting... it is actually way over acted with grossly exaggerated dram added into each scene. Intentionally. The one talent show with the multiple judges has a openly gay male judge. It is not enough that the man is openly gay and looks it, the producers feel the need to hammer home that fact he is gay by a 'prop', different on each show, but still on display. Sometimes they make him hold a Barbie doll the entire show, other times a long feather..... and he seems to tolerate that annoyance well. In the US, the gay rights people would be calling for the death penalty on the producers for 'stereotyping and demeaning humilation' that the gay man has to suffer thru.... Or so they would say. i am bob Posted March 2, 2013 Author Posted March 2, 2013 So what you're saying is that it is still very much like American TV? I could list examples... :mocking: In Canada, it seems we only have 2 schools of thought on actors... The first kind is where you will find William Shatner, the Kids in the Hall, Trailer Park Boys, Howie Mandell, etc. I call this the "School of Over-Acting"... The other kind of actor you will find more in our romantic television stories - both male and female actors will resemble Walter Cronkite. :attention:
Bruce Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Most of Kids in the Hall writing was creative. The main guy turned out to be a dead beat dad... Shatner IS IN HIS OWN UNIVERSE, BONES! Paul Gross was very nice..... Howie Mandell used to be funny 30 years ago but is a germ a phobe now.....
jpbago Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Yes, the regular PI TV shows here are terrible. The theatre is another story. Every mall has a theatre. They are very good, especially the balcony seats. The price for most is 150p or 170p for 3D. The last James Bond movie, Skyfall, was on here about 2 weeks before it came to Toronto. And then there are the pirated DVDs everywhere for 40p or 50P, some with 8 or 10 movies on the disc.
Dave Hounddriver Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 The price for most is 150p or 170p for 3D. Holy crap. I paid 400 pesos a seat for a 3D movie in SM mall last month. Where do you go to the Theatre?

ibemarshall Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 In 2010 my wife and I took her brother and his wife to the Mall of Asia for the day. I 'forced' them to go to the IMAX theater there explaining I wanted to see a 3D movie and knowing they would be too shy to pick the most expensive movie to see plus the fact I knew they had never had the whole 3D experience of putting on the special glasses etc. We saw the owl animation movie 'The Guardians of Ga'hoole'. The cost per ticket was 450P but that included popcorn and a drink as I recall. It was worth the extra money to see them enjoy the new adventure of a 3D spectacular. I believe the cost per ticket was 150P or 200P for a SM Mall movie during the same timeframe, we saw 'The Town', a first run movie. We tried to purchase our tickets ahead of time....say an hour or so, but were told that was not possible and we had to come back no earlier than 15 minutes before the posted show time...go figure :89:
