A Simple Test Everyone Should Try.

I have been thinking about it for a long time so I finally typed a Simple Test with questions that can be answered by male or female of any age and from any country. The answer to a few of the questions will vary by country.

I typed the test using Microsoft Word and then printed 3 copies for the three people living with me and my wife. The test results were very interesting and we got a lot of laughs from some of the answers. My wife translated any questions that they didn't fully understand. And, we had to be sure they didn't discuss the questions with each other or use a dictionary or any other source of information.

I will copy and paste the test here and attach the file so you can test your girlfriend, wife, relatives or friends to see what they know or don't know. I tried to use questions that were easy to answer. I believe I learned the answer to all of the questions in elementary school.

I will post the correct answers later so they will be separated from the test.

Sounds like trouble is brewing...... Good questions but subject to intepretations as the wording on the box questions asked about 'sides' (instead of surfaces) and there are those that will argue a top and a bottom are not a 'side', therefore not counted. Question 29 is beyond most and is subject to your wife's understanding and vocabulary. Those 3 words are not ever(?) used in the daily life of the average Pinoy. (The answer starts with an O)

Being smarter than those around you is not much of an accomplishment if you are not smart enough to keep that detail to yourself. :tiphat:

Don't rub it in too much as it will backfire on you. :mocking:

I dare say if you gave that same test to so called educated persons in the US (you know those that sat in the classroom sleeping for 12 years) you would get some very strange answers also ..... now if you gave the same test based on how to make something out of a piece of rubber .... string ... duct-tape and cardboard and make it work you will find that Filipino ingenuity would around circles around those same folks from the west ..... education is only as good as what you use it for ..... and how you use it ....

When I was hiring people to work for the company I worked for I passed up may a college grad in favor of someone with a HS diploma but had worked in that particular field relating to the job requirements and had common sense ..... you have lots of people graduating in the US that can't even read or write .... but you have lots of people graduating in the Phils that can read .... write and speak in TWO languages .... I can't do that ...... I wonder how many educated Americans can .... JMHO .....

Well. Several of the questions don't have to do with smartness, but with knowledge. There are many high examed, who are stupid  :)

E g the person, who made the IQ test asking if New York is the capital of USA, don't have much IQ himself...   :mocking:

(Well. Perhaps it's a partition of IQ in it if asking an American, but not if asking an African bushman, because if he have heared of it, it don't make any difference for him anyway, so why bother learning such, instead of important stuff e g as how to breed cattle best?  :)

Btw 50 is a tricky question too. The corect answer can be ANY. E g it can be 51 AND 1, if giving 1 point for each corect answer and a bohnus of 50, if get all answers corect

Yes, sure. Common sence skill is much more important, because knowledge can be learned, while common sence can't  when someone don't have it. (Only be improved if having it.)

(And for many jobs there are more factors, which are much more important than a high IQ/knowledge, as handyness and EQ (Emotion=Understanding of feelings.)

There is no question about a box. A square, rectangle and triangle are not boxes. And, the sides are easy to count.

The test is not about words used in daily life but in what was learned in school, from reading, talking to relatives and from TV.

OK guys, I really don't want to get into any pissing contest about how to formulate questions but some

of the questions were a bit confusing, at least for me.  For example, question 21 about the material

state of water.  The blank line provided for the answer leads me to believe it's only one of the choices

given (liquid, solid OR vapor).  My answer would be YES (all the above) but will it be incorrect because

it's not one of the choices given?

Another example of my confusion is question 9: what is the name of the imaginary line around the middle

or center of your planet?  Around the middle leads me to believe the answer is circumference but that

could be wrong also because a circumference is not a line (it ain't straight).  Other possible answers are

axis or diameter.

Is this Simple Test for us expats or for the local Filipinos?  I believe It would be much more accurate to

gauge the knowledge of the common Filipino if it was written in their local dialect.  Furthermore, we should

not judge or prejudge other nationalities because the English language and culture was NOT their primary

teaching.

Respectfully -- Jake

Water is a liquid. If it was a solid then it wouldn't be water it would be ice.

Look at any globe or world map and you will see the imaginary line which is called the Equator.

The questions are based on basic knowledge that any elementary school should teach.

Maybe I should give the answers now to prevent the confusion.

I prefer the test I used to give when hiring retail staff...

  1. If 1+1=2, why does 2+2=4?
  2. If a dog barks 3 times, what happens if he whines or yelps at the door?
  3. If red compliments green, what happens to blue?

Who cares what the answers are - it's the attitude I am looking for.  If they scowl and object, they definitely aren't suited for my business as customers are going to ask questions that will produce the same result.  I prefer people who would be courteous with a smile throughout!r

To me, knowledge tests are fine if you have learned it.  I prefer testing for good people who are not afraid to learn! JMHO

Ah! You are stuck in 3rd grade and thinking about 1 and 2 dimensional 'shapes'. So ask those same square, rectangle, triangle questions to a college or university math student and you get a different, more complete answer than the 3rd grader.

A box is a box, regardless of the shape and when you have a 'shape' that is enclosed, you have a box! It is conceptual thinking to realize there is a top and bottom which are also called 'sides'. This comes into play in real life doing heat load calculations on a big box, often called a house or building.

And again you get back to variations in translations between what you think you mean and what others assume you mean as evidenced in Jakes planet questions. From a geography view, Jake was wrong, but from a mathematical view, his answer is within the range of being correct.

One such question which has multiple answers is What do you call a type of sandwich that is long and tubular? Depending on your location, you will get answers such as Hoagie, Sub, Hero, pickles and peanut butter and panacit and San Miguel (Jake again)...... all but one are correct.
