I sort of "lost" my Spanish, but because it was learned as a child using the Communication method, language experts claim it will all come back to me through language immersion.

My wife experiences this each time we go to Cuba.  She ends up translating for the Brits.

And, while we were in Rome, she used Spanish to communicate better with Italians with very limited English.

Actually I am shocked with the foreign translations and the geeks here on the forum. I am not sure where Canadian Bob is right now... perhaps gathering wood for winter which is due to hit Canada any day now. But if Bob were here I am sure this is what his response would be....

Communication in a foreign language? I have an APP for that! :hystery:

JJ.. as your 3 years of Latin, I have 2. All I remember is belo bele belum, and that is probably incorrect as well. I spent 2 years in a private school named Boy's Latin and was forced to endure the learning of a dead language. In my 2nd year, I amassed 254 demerits. I was told there would be no 3rd year!

The only reason I am alive today is that corporal punishment was not allowed. :cheersty:

My mother had this terrible, terrible idea that she should give God one of her children. I was "It." My choices were either physical fitness with a drill instructor to get ready to attend the Virginia Military Institute like my brother or study Latin in preparation for the priesthood. Being fat and lazy, I thought Latin would be easier. Hated learning the language, although I enjoyed Roman history.

The priesthood idea disappeared after I was caught going to the casino rather than Sunday Mass.

And how many hints did you have to leave for your mother to look for you at the casino? :hystery:

VMI? was this the same VMI as in Staunton Virginia? I used to live close to that place in 1977 or so.

Yes. After his second year, my brother came home with a Southern accent. Even his Tagalog had a Southern drawl.

There is a tradition wherein Philippine presidents get to select two Filipinos each to West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy and Coast Guard. The potential candidates are recommended to the president by high ranking military officers. One of my uncles graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis from that traditional. I read a female cadet from the Philippines graduated top of her West Point class. This was several years ago.

We need to go back to topic, which is Chinese Dating. There are also Chinese language match making websites. America has similar websites. The ones I can immediately recall are eHarmony and Christian Mingle. We have a friend in Shanghai whose family business is domestic tourism. They arrange weekend travel to nearby resorts for singles to meet and socialize. It's highly structured because the Chinese are very rank conscious. One busload might be younger alumnae from a certain university. Another might be those who share a common hobby like golf. The theory is if you play golf you must be at a certain social rank. My understanding is they don't actually play golf. You sit around and talk about Tiger Woods and what kind of clubs he uses.

So sad... so many Grade A women, so few men like Thomas. :mocking:
But I don't want Grade A women   :)

(I have said No thanks to a Swedish young, beautiful, funny daughter to one of the Volvo bosses, because she don't think ahead enough  :)      And I don't want ANY Grade A woman, if they count as I suppose Chinese count, either if going for rich/carriere or beauty. (I don't want any of the normal Chinese educated women, because they bother much to much about carriere and money, pushing their kids to hard too. I want one knowing the local language where I will settle, beaty around average, but clever, so I can let her do things without messing up, so I don't need to work much

And I suppouse Chisese grade me down a lot by I want to live in the outback  :mocking:

Yes, but then Thomas speaks Swedish and Jake grunts and uses hand signals to get the message across.
Oh. Isn't enough to speak the language of love?  :)

(My grandfather was boss in a museum back when I were small kid. Sometimes he guided too when they were short of people, even to Englishmen and Germans, although my grandfather could speak only Swedish - plus he was very good at body language, so he showed with body language, joked a lot during the guiding, speaking Swedish with German accent to the Germans and with English accent to the English, and the foreign visitors were very satisfied, finding it very funny  :)    I hope I have inherit enough of that skill.)

even to Englishmen

Wow! Even to Englishmen! :wt-hell: That is shocking. Your grandfather was very progressive for that period in time. :hystery:

Yes, Spanish, Italian, French and Portoguese all belong to the Latin language group, so if knowing one, it's possible to understand some in the other languages too. And rather many latin words are borrowed to both English and Swedish, which assist understanding too.

(E g Spanish- companiero, English - companion, Swedish - kompanion not meaning exact the same, but enough to give hints of the meaning of sentences.)

And by the frequent borrowing of words from Spanish, Filipino is kind of "Latin" language too  :)

the one huge drawback, very, very few of them can speak any english. Which of course makes it hugely problematic to get to know one of these beauties.

There are certain issues with Chinese ladies.

The late Ian Fleming put it this way:

"If you have to choose between a Japanese mistress and a Chinese mistress, choose the Japanese.

When it is over, the Japanese girl will accept her fate.

The Chinese girl will inform your wife, your employer and the newspapers!"
