What about the average wage earner??????MANILA -(Dow Jones)- The Philippine government will increase the salaries of public sector workers by an average of 50% over four years starting from the beginning of July.Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, chief aide to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, said the increase is aimed at attracting and keeping competent people and helping public servants cope with the tough economic times. He said the legislature has approved the higher pay.By July 1, the minimum wage of government workers will be PHP402 ($8.45) a day, including allowance, Ermita said.Private sector workers in metropolitan Manila currently receive a daily minimum pay of PHP382.The government has already set aside funds for the pay increases, while government corporations and financial institutions must work within their budgets, and may delay the adjustment if the funds aren't immediately available, Ermita said.

They're still slogging away for maybe a couple hundred pesos a day, if they're fortunate enough to be employed at all.
