My gf was telling me that when I run low on cash she will take a job as an OFW and send money back to support me.     But she said there was a minimum age of 23 before she could do that.  I said thats about the time I will be broke    and then I looked into what is required and expected of an OFW. This news clipping is almost a year old now but I expect the information is still current:

Reminders for domestic workers going abroad

Filipinos leaving for abroad to work as domestic workers should be aware of their rights to a minimum salary of $400 a month, regular days off, and decent treatment from employers.

These were among the reminders from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), which said these rights are included in their standard employment contracts.

In a post on his Twitter account, POEA head Hans Leo Cacdac said OFWs are entitled to:

a minimum monthly salary of $400
eight hours' rest per day
one day off a week
free transportation from the Philippines to the host country and back
free accommodations and food
free medical and dental services
vacation leave with pay of up to 15 days a year
Personal life accident, medical and repatriation insurance from a reputable insurance company
Remittance of money to the Philippines, and assistance from the employer in setting up a bank account for this
just and humane treatment from the employer

Cacdac also reminded the OFWs to keep and take care of their passports and work/residence permits.

He also reminded them of the minimum age requirment of 23.

Cacdac reiterated employment contracts of household service workers must be approved by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, for their protection.

On the other hand, he stressed there should be no placement fees to work abroad.

Cacdac added the household service workers will need the Technical Education Skills Development Authority NC2 Certificate and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Language and Culture Orientation are needed for first-time recruits. — KBK, GMA News

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Good News Dave but Not all countries are playing to those rules. From what we hear and wer'e told, not all are treated to this. ( it's easy for the PI to make these rules but few follow them) We have a niece who has just gone to Dubai [5 weeks ago] and it is just about the opposite, No proper  Food, No Transport and she has yet to have a day off. She has yet to receive any salary as she was told she has to Repay Certain things first. With No day off she can't get to any office to complain, she tells us that the last one to complain went missing. She told us by Phone( here tablet was confiscated) that she is so Unhappy but can do nothing.

Azon is making some inquires but no seems to bothered. ??

JP :tiphat:

[ sorry have to amend this, it OMAN she is working.]

I would say all those rules go out the window in the Middle East. I would not recommend anyone in my PI family to work abroad as a domestic worker. As a rule of thumb, they will hold their passport and violate every rule involving human trafficking.

There are many Philippine Embassies sheltering women victims of the above antics that you are referring to. These Embassies do not have the capability to make a new passport (WTF?) and it takes forever to repatriate these women home.

I have told K's sister who was thinking of it that the only place I would recommend is Hong Kong (which has an enforced minimum wage requirement) and that if she is serious about it she should learn to cook western meals and learn to drive and get a driver's licence, if she does that I can ask a friend's mother to find her a place with one of her friends.

That would also avoid the agency placement fee scam.

I don't know of ANY agency following that, but I know some who don't...

(=The agency pay the transport and medical tests and such demanded, BUT then they demand good pay for that.  (E g around 50 % of the salary during the first 6 months.)   The AGENCY keep the passports as security for such "loans"...

In HongKong I know of  OFWs geting 20 000 pesos/month,

but in Quwait only 10 000 p.

One got only an apple to lunch, because the EMPLOYER had diet!!!  :bash:

But an other is allowed to eat "no limit",  which suit her very good, because she has as hobby to eat   :hystery:    (but she is very slim anyway).
