I recommend getting a poolside room, especially if your bringing your family along. Just don't get any of the beach side rooms. You will be next to the bar that plays loud music till around 10pm every night - in addition, the hot water was not working the last time I was there.

There are many bars in the area for you to visit, but I wouldn't recommend it for families. You may have been better off staying in the Subic Freeport area for more family fun.

Wednesday nights at Wild Orchid Barefoot bar is steak night.  For P495 you can get a 250 gram tenderloin with soup, salad and potato.  I was there this past Wednesday with three other couples.  Live band playing in the background.  You can go on base and try Texas Joes BBQ place.  Nice and clean, air conditioning very good ribs and brisket.  Gilbert runs that place.  If you want to spend about $40 or more per person you can try The Castle on base.  VERY VERY upscale.  The owner also owns The Urban Deli across from the yacht club.  Brand new place with great bread, chocolate and sandwiches.  Today I had lunch at Extreme Expresso on base.  Very good pizza ( for the Philippines) and EXCELLENT toasted almond gelato ice cream for dessert.

The bars in Barretto are either morning/afternoon drinking bars or evening girlie bars.

What day will you be arriving?

Another good place to check is Vasco's on Argonaut highway https://www.google.com.ph/maps/place/Vasco's/@14.8091443,120.2978657,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x72d84449eb0a58b0 .Seafairer type of atmosphere, cannons, ropes, shipwreck materials. It has a small museum from the owner's wreck diving days (Ming dynasty pottery, etc.). The food is OK and cheap. It's mainly about the atmosphere, right on the water overlooking the bay. http://www.vascosresort-museum.com/

Another popular destination is the Camayan Beach Resort http://camayanbeachresort.com/https://www.google.com.ph/maps/place/Camayan+Beach+Resort/@14.764777,120.250597,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x3396747896342b61:0x8eaa672fee95b27b , The hotel costs about the same as Wild Orchid and if just visiting, they charge 300p per person for entry to their private beach. It is located next to Ocean Adventure http://www.oceanadventure.com.ph/ , Also, there is a tiger park called Zoobic Safari http://www.zoobic.com.ph/  located on the way to Camayan. https://www.google.com.ph/maps/place/Zoobic+Safari/@14.753443,120.265695,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x339674ef7fe3c425:0x10c910256df96df4

SubicSteve pretty much nailed it on the best restaurants. There is also a relatively new mall (Harbor Point) located within the Freeport. It has a few restaurants with US fast food chains (if you get to missing that), McDonalds, KFC, Army Navy and TGIF.

Overall Baloy beach is really not a family atmosphere IMHO...

Thank you for the useful information. I am looking forward to getting there now. I will explore a few of your suggestions. We arrive Friday 8th May around 8pm I reckon depending on traffic through Manila.

Thank you for the information. I will try for a quiet room but if the band is on until 3am I will still be there with them!! Hoping for not too many early nights.

Next time I will look at the Freeport area. I normally use Camayan Beach but they are full.

Just opposite the Wild Orchid entrance is Harley's. Wide range of sports on view. If you are interested in a particular sport they'll do their best. They serve Western pub style food and when I was there in Feb they had a locally brewed craft ale on tap. AFAICR there is access to a secluded beach directly from the restaurant terrace.

I stayed in a standard room at the Wild Orchid and found it good value (they are unusually large). I would agree with the earlier poster about avoiding the beach side rooms and noticed that the pool side rooms seemed popular with families. The staff were efficient and friendly so overall I would recommend the WO, especially if you are with a family.
