And that's supposed to be a credible assertion?  Who?  Where?  Why?  That's just exactly the type of vague innuendo I'm talking about.

Now, there is one very important thing for all foreigners whether living in the Philippines or just visiting.  I can't remember if it's in this thread or others.  The substance of it is, don't act sketchy or like you are hiding something, ever.  Sad to say, many expats living in the PI are folks who got out of their own country because they couldn't make it there.  They are losers and/or social pariahs or worse.

If you expect the Phil authorities to be on your side, keep your act together.  Be trustworthy and decent and above board.  Perhaps as important as anything else, BE POLITE.  Say "good morning" and "good evening" to LEOs and look them in the eye.  Respect begets respect.  There are lots of people they could go after, so make sure you aren't one.

I clearly remember the incident JGF described of the fellow who "hanged" himself in custody, it wasn't that long ago. JGF and I are not best buds, I am sticking up for the truth. Normally I would track down the news report for you but my connection is laughable at the moment.

There's too much drama and moral judgment in this thread.  I have lurked on this forum for a while and people comment as if the sky were falling.

Wanting to deal with plain facts and not sensationalistic innuendo, I asked a neighbor who is a long-time police detective about this.  He echoed the comments way up above on this thread coming from the other policeman.  Here is the simple reality: if she is under 18, you need to have her accompanied by a chaperone -- who is demonstrably over 18 -- at all times.  Don't be alone with her for even an instant.  There is zero problem with being in the company of an underage girl being provided that she is accompanied by a friend or relative who is an adult.  That means that that person could be anywhere from 18 to 115.  It's that simple.   Fulfill that basic, basic requirement and you're not going to get arrested or go to jail.  You may well get some disapproving looks from people -- I have no opinion on that -- but you ain't getting arrested.  Bright-line rule.

This idea that you can't be interested in someone <18 and wait for them to turn 18 is simply hogwash.  In a situation where a relationship arises, that is precisely what you are supposed to do.  You're perfectly free to meet her parents and/or family, and perfectly free to send her messages and so forth provided that the content is PG-rated at most.

Again, I am not saying you SHOULD do this.  That's up to you and God.  I am, however, saying that in no way have you broken the letter or spirit of the law if you do it this way.

Yes, there is corruption in law enforcement, and yes, once in a while foreigners are treated unfairly.  But come on.

Dating 16-17 year olds when you're in your 50s-60s is disgusting, women here look much younger and have childlike bodies as it is.
I get paranoid people think I'm a pervert when I'm with my girlfriends 18 year old daughter alone and I'm only 28 lol.
Girls here are much more immature than in the West aswell, don't have a problem with age gaps but you could atleast wait until they're an actual adult, e.g 18 or imo more like 21-25.

I just thought I'd chuck this in for those of you that haven't gelled with what posts are saying. Chaperoned or not, if she squeals your gone. :shock_40_anim_gif:Why risk it.

Philippines[edit]

The minimum age for consensual sex is 12 years. United States' Country Reports on Human Rights Practices lists the age of consent of Philippines as 12.[71] Sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 12 is defined as rape, under Chapter 3, Article 266 of the Anti-Rape Law of 1997.[72]

The statutory rape law criminalizes sex with minors under age 12 and sex with a child under age 18 involving force, threat, or intimidation. The maximum penalty for child rape is 40 years in prison plus a lifetime bar from political office. As of August the PNP reported 2,750 cases of child rape. The production, possession, and distribution of child pornography are illegal, and penalties range from one month to life in prison plus fines from 50,000 to five million pesos ($1,000 to $100,000), depending on the gravity of the offense.[71]

In regard to children under the age of 18, as described earlier in the act as an individual under the age of 18, the law reads:

Article III, Section 5. Child Prostitution and Other Sexual Abuse .
Children, whether male or female, who for money, profit, or any other consideration or due to the coercion or influence of any adult, syndicate or group, indulge in sexual intercourse or lascivious conduct, are deemed to be children exploited in prostitution and other sexual abuse.[73]

Regardless of what the age of consent is in other countries, the law for US citizens who are abroad can be found here:

Citizen's Guide To U.S. Federal Law On The Extraterritorial Sexual Exploitation Of Children

https://www.justice.gov/criminal-ceos/citizens-guide-us-federal-law-extraterritorial-sexual-exploitation-children

For US law abroad a child is considered to be anyone under the age of 18.

For US law abroad

One wonders how the US legal system would handle one of their Muslim citizens coming to Philippines and following local Sharia law and thus marrying a 16 year old.  It could get very complicated.

Those of a certain political leaning would call it a "celebration of diversity".
