chris49 Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Why are a large amount of foreigners including new forum members, heading for Cebu? I have never been there myself. What's the attraction?

Forum Support Mike J Posted October 20, 2015 Forum Support Posted October 20, 2015 I have to visit Cebu City every so often for visa, health care, etc that cannot be found elsewhere. Personally, Cebu City would be one of the last places I would choose to live here in the Philippines. Traffic congestion is just unreal and seems to be getting worse, also the air pollution is very bad.
JustB Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) Heading to the airport in 45 minutes for 3 weeks over there & my reason for going is simply that I haven't been for around 5 years & want to see how much it has changed since then + visit Bohol which is something I've always regretted not doing on my previous 6-8 visits to Cebu. Of course I only went & messed my flights up & have to change in Kalibo so there's a massive temptation to "accidentally" miss my connecting flight & head over to Boracay for a few days ;) Do you think FP would mind waiting at Cebu airport for me for 2-3 days [emoji4]. Lol, I shouldn't joke about it, it's bad enough that her flight from Davao gets in 2 hours earlier than mine but the last time we went to Boracay my flight was delayed & she had to wait 5 hours for me at Kalibo... Not a happy Princess. Edited October 21, 2015 by JustB
Forum Support Old55 Posted October 20, 2015 Forum Support Posted October 20, 2015 THere is a lot to offer on the island, Cebu City has one reasonable hospital and many imported items not found outside of Manila. I agree with Mike though, traffic congestion and air pollution have made living in or near Cebu City unworkable.
Dave Hounddriver Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) More advertising.. Agreed. And better advertising. It seems like every new forum member asks about the beaches in Cebu. Those of us who have lived there know that the beaches near Cebu city are not worth bragging about but the advertising focuses on the few nice beaches at paid resorts on Mactan or in different spots around the province. It worked on me. I originally moved to Cebu for the beaches  PS, Yes there were other factors but consider the choice of Baguio and Cebu and the advertising about beaches made me choose Cebu. Just one more example to illustrate that getting people to believe it prevails over the truth. Guy F. Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Why are a large amount of foreigners including new forum members, heading for Cebu? I have never been there myself. What's the attraction? Nightlife could have something to do with it.
DavidK Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Airport not too far, reasonable healthcare, active nightlife, plenty of shopping opportunities (HP sauce available), recreational facilities (cinema, bowling, golf courses), wide choice of accommodation to suit most budgets, good quality and variety of restaurants. To which one can add all the driving fun one can handle plus air that's barely fit to breathe.
Popular Post Jollygoodfellow Posted October 21, 2015 Popular Post Posted October 21, 2015 Usually when asking about Cebu most automatically think Cebu city. Cebu is the island of Cebu and Cebu city is the capital city therefor the reasons why people choose Cebu differ. Guy F says nightlife which is true, not just a bang for your buck but nightclubs, restaurants, movie theaters and whatever turns your nite on. Then there comes the central hub, international airport and only a hop step and jump to many other locations in the Phils. Beaches, not in the city but up north, Bantayan Island or south to Moalboal where you can swim with the sharks. There are a lot of expats in Toledo I have heard which is on the Island of Cebu, west I think but not sure what the attraction is. So as in City living, most of all you would need, power on more than off. Medical facilities, ambulance etc. Condo living if that's what you want. Yes these are available in other cities too.
Popular Post Tukaram (Tim) Posted October 21, 2015 Popular Post Posted October 21, 2015 Reasonably located, lots of expats - so a lot of foreign food options. It is big, but not Manila big. Nice international airport. Some night life (not like Angeles or Thailand... but it is ok if you are looking for it). Good central location to branch out from, if you tire of the city. Northern Cebu, Bohol, Dumagete etc... My original plan was Cebu to start, then look around for something smaller/quieter, but not too far away. I was introduced to a girl by a friend... we chatted online a few months while I prepped everything to leave the US... and met her in Iloilo. I had never heard of Iloilo - and here I stayed. Keep your plans flexible ha ha :tiphat:
