william_c Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 This is an issue that must be significantly addressed one of these days. Yeah I know, get real. Don't know about this where you reside, here, and what your tolerance is for the burning of refuse but it stopped where I grew up, more than 50 years ago, due to the intolerance of the smell and the health concerns of local citzens. To that end, since this country is heavily dependent on tourists and expats infusion of commerce one would figure that keeping the environment cleaner would be a high priority mission. It took me awhile to ask the asawa about this and she simply replied that the locals don't care about garbage and that is why all the neighbors burn theirs weekly. However, I do believe there is some level of collection, depending on the influence of any given neighborhood, and there are landfills. As for me, the smoke is starting to heavily influence my desire to live here, spend here, invest here and contribute here. Only time will tell if we seek a fresher place to call home, if one can be found, or simply not come back any more?
Forum Support scott h Posted October 25, 2015 Forum Support Posted October 25, 2015 My observation here in Manila, only Leaves and vegetable waste is burned, rarely. Basically we have 24/7 trash pick up in our area, if a garbage truck is driving by, sees a bag or two they stop and pick it up. It's taken to a reclamation yard, where anything that has not been found by the regular trash pickers is recycled for extra money for the city. Could this be something that only occurs in the province?

Hello William, Please forgive me sir but I'm gonna go out on the limb and say that you are slowly getting frustrated quickly.....he, he. From you previous posts, I really can't blame you. Perhaps a serious talk with your wife about relocating to another province or another island would ease you pain somewhat? My good friend NorCal Mike lives in Butuan and coming back next month with wife and family. He describes his neighbors and neighborhood as his long lost paradise. He lives south of Butuan, a rural area where his 2nd home has been established a long time ago. I feel your frustration -- I've been there and escaped back to US without my wife a long time ago. And I'm Filipino. Warmest regards to you and your wife, respectfully -- Jake Edited October 25, 2015 by Jake
fred Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Just lately I have noticed a haze in the sky..Nothing to do with the locals here but probably more to do with the locals in Indonesia. I have no problem with burning leaves in the evening..The Mosquito`s hate it though.
MacBubba Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 It bothered me at first, but the alternative was for uncollected garbage to accumulate flies and decompose rapidly in the heat. I can't say I like it, but I have come to terms with it.
Larry45 Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Could this be something that only occurs in the province? From what I've seen, it's much more of a problem in far-flung regions of the province and quite rare in the cities, at least here on Leyte. There is trash pickup in almost all areas, but if you live a long distance from the main highway crossing, it's not easy to carry your garbage so far, so it gets burned or tossed into the river. But to answer the OP's question, just move closer to a city and find a neighborhood with regular garbage pickup.....no need to consider leaving the Phils (at least not for that reason). :cheersty:
RBM Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Sadly my experience is garbage pick up is pretty much irrelevant. My previous place had this problem early morning and every night in spite of daily garbage pick up. Plastic was the worst. We complained to no avail, it's like part of the culture, must be done. Only solution is to move, best of luck and there are areas without this problem although something else will pop up. Like loud music, motor cycles roaring, TV blaring ......it's all part of the package.
Forum Support Old55 Posted October 25, 2015 Forum Support Posted October 25, 2015 My folks old place in Talisay (suburb of Cebu City) dawn would come wood smoke for rice cooking. In the afternoon it started to become worse with the trike and diesel exhaust mixing with burning leaves garbage and plastic. By 6-7PM a choking toxic fog enveloped the low lying areas. Unlivable deal breaker for me. The folks got a new place will above the city about 1,000Ft level with some mild clean breeze most days a thousand percent better. I suggest you move up into the hills or away from the source.
