Tukaram (Tim) Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 The only problem I would have is if we broke up right after spending all this money building a house. Give me time to build back some savings and I will be fine. Not sure if you guys have noticed, but over here we are considered exotic. Finding a replacement would not be that hard. Hope I don't have to ha ha. :tiphat: 2
Jack Peterson Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 PREPARED? Yep sure am, any problems and me, the Pensions and the ATM cards just walk, the Debts are not ours mateys, So the Government keep telling us, We came with nothing but us and the ATM Card. We own nothing. Harsh? Tough Words? sure but it is the way it is. "Bed making" Comes to mind here. If Problems are caused, they can own them! Popular Post frosty (chris) Posted November 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted November 9, 2015 This is one of the reasons I am loathe to invest to much here in the PI, financially or emotionally. It's happened before and I just got left behind like a shag on a rock, holding all the debts, sorry sir never again. If it all here goes belly up, just grab my passport, computer, close the door, adios amegos.
Popular Post Dave Hounddriver Posted November 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted November 9, 2015 The only problem I would have is if we broke up right after spending all this money building a house. I hear that. And the added problem is she (if she is like mine) KNOWS she has you over a barrel as soon as the payments are done and the title is in her name. It means her attitude will change from 'simple girl' to princess' overnight. It means you cannot afford to fight with her like most couples do because she now has the upper hand. It means you will spend many long hours wondering if you did the right thing.

Popular Post jon1 Posted November 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted November 9, 2015 That scenario is why I chose the Subic route. The leasehold rights can be in your name only and she can not contest it. Especially if paid for before you were married (non-conjugal property). I keep all but 2 months budget in the US (as it is insured and out of reach should I want it so). She does have a property in her name only in her hometown which to me is already written off. Would it hurt? Most definitely. Would I get by? Most definitely but not another marriage. This is my second and last one.

Popular Post Tukaram (Tim) Posted November 9, 2015 Popular Post Posted November 9, 2015 she has you over a barrel as soon as the payments are done and the title is in her name Yeah... out in the province, on her uncle's land, built for cash... no title. It is just hers ha ha One time she threatened to go back home (other side of the island). I looked her dead in the eye and said I would help her pack. She knew I was serious... and never said that again. This was, of course, before we built the house. I am nice enough guy - but she knows I will not take any crap. :tiphat:

After reading all the "my wife / gf is perfect" posts, I thought I might be the only one in the forum who hasn't quite reached the pinnacle of happiness :cheersty:
Huggybearman Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 There are absolutely no guarantees in life so the old investment adage, 'never invest more than you are prepared to lose' will hold you in good stead. That especially holds true for those of us who are retired and on a fixed income. You don't have the option of returning to work to make up any losses. So many before have been burnt by buying, or building, a property they can never own and the relationship subsequently goes sour leaving them in a very bad position, financially and emotionally. If finances are that tight, I would suggest never buy here, just rent. It might be more expensive in the long run, but quite possibly not, if you invest your money wisely back home. At least you still hold all the cards and can walk away with the majority of your financial assets intact if it all goes pear shaped. If you hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, you probably wont go too far wrong. Just my two pennies worth. Ken
