Wow you are so lucky, getting a great sleep in.

When staying in my Wifes house in Hipodromo Cebu the rosters start at 3.30am, bikes start revving soon after, dogs never stop all night. And this is within stones throw of Ayala.

Swap area next time I come over.

You`re welcome to this place I have had enough. Funnily enough roosters don`t bother me at all as we used to keep birds when I was younger.

Roosters and dogs don't bother me, nor does traffic noise (I used to live next to a US highway and fire station).  But there is enough loud music to keep me mad ha ha They let me sleep until 0615 this morning.

Actually I downloaded some 'white noise' from YouTube (not 1970's punk music... a different white noise).  It is an 80 minute recording of a jet engines.  Reminds me of the ship, and is just about the right pitch to block my 24/7 tinnitus.  I keep my iPod next to the bed and plug in when the noise starts... loop the playlist and back to sleep until 1000!  :tiphat:

I will escape from here soon.

To Where ? If to some other place in the PI, short of a WWII Japanese holdout soldier's lair deep in the jungle and far from people, you'll most likely ontly be swapping one set of noises for another.

IMHO you are in the classical existential dilemna of "No Exit".  :1 (103):

Grasshopper, you must master the art of 'The Stone Ear."

Then of course, if you have a lot of cash to trash, you could build a really high-tech, sound proof house or bedroom. LOL

A man of limited financial means has to resort to expandable foam ear plugs.

In truth, you do have my sympathy/empathy.

These kind people will make sure you are awake whether you want to be or not.

This is one of those things in the Philippines where you just have to have the Serenity prayer tattooed on your arm:

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I CANNOT change

The courage to change the things I can

And the wisdom to know the difference

Because if we cant accept things like this, and it makes us very unhappy, we either have to move to a mountain top someplace or leave,

These people have no consideration for other peoples comfort or well being

I was actually thinking of starting a new topic this morning about this. The Filipino culture is almost generous to a fault, as a guest they will give you their last morsel of rice, etc. etc. etc.

But I just seems to me at times, if they don't know you, or are not related to you, or don't work for you, or you are probably not going to buy something from them or in other words are of no use to them. They just don't care. Sonjack's example is well taken. Driving habits is another, as is litter, spitting, urinating in public the examples go on and on. It seems to me "at times" in the area "I live in" that there is very little sense of community spirit unless a person directly benefits from it.

A rant? Maybe. But unless I personally realize it and come to accept it, I really have no business staying here. :cheersty:

Damn Kev I had to check and make sure this topic didn't belong in the X rated forum .... well I feel for all you guys that get woke up early by things other then the gentle hand of your partner tugging gently on your ........ OOOOOPS ..... sorry guys wrong board  ....

After spending 5+ years in Cebu City and having to listen to all the stuff you guys mentioned above I can only say we are truly living in paradise .... very rarely do outside noises wake us up ..... sometimes someone will chop some wood or maybe do lite construction work but other than the roosters .... goats and a couple of dogs it is as quit as a church mouse .... infact just last night I got up to look to see who was driving down the street at 12:00am and we live right beside the road .... only the occasional birthday party gets out of hand and most of them are over by 11:00pm ..... even when I lived in the US this is one of the quietest neighborhoods I have ever lived in ..... and we don't intend on going anywhere ....

Ahhh, the sounds of life!  I notice you write that before 6 am in the morning and that I am making my first post of the day at a little after 10.  Honestly, I thought it was bad here because the construction workers start working on my neighbor's house at 8 am and they like to make all their noise between 8 am and 10 am, then they can find ways to work quietly for the rest of the day, so quietly you start to wonder if they are even there (probably siesta time after putting in 2 hours of work ya know).

But there are some quiet areas.  I have lived in areas like you describe and I have even lived in one place where it was the neighbors who complained about me making noise (wife singing on Magic Sing after 9 pm they said).  You will find what you are looking for in time.

Forget an alarm clock.

These kind people will make sure you are awake whether you want to be or not.

0430 people going past saying prayers through a loud haler

0438 Landlord shouting ti his wife their dog start that high pitch barking.

0445 workers are starting up the motor bike at the office over the road and reving the guts out of them.

0500 church bells ringing.

0515 a man selling food going past on his bike beeping the horn.

0525 lorry turns up opposite t for a delivery and they are shouting not talking to each other.

0547 Landlords dog is still yellping/barking.

0530 load music starts from a stall  (on the plaza) which is there for the fiesta next week

And at 0600 I guess we will have the usual load music from the private school 100 yards away.

These people have no consideration for other peoples comfort or well being. I will escape from here soon.

Actually I am really surprised that so many expats can tolerate this typical noise level.  This is how I lived for 6 months after I arrived, with no air con and open windows 8 feet from the street.  I was tempted to kill that 05:15 pandesal bike horn beeper!   :hystery:

So this is a big reason why I chose Subic Bay Freeport Zone and the old Navy housing.  The first time we came here in Jan 13 we took a taxi up into Kalayaan, I got out, and I was in heaven!  No traffic, no noise, no vendors, nice homes and in general most people respect each others privacy.  After 2.5 years of renting we have now arranged to purchase a long term lease and plan to stay here.

Here is a link I gave before to a video of our quiet neighborhood.  Yes, it is not perfect and it costs more to live here but it is well worth it to me.

Here is another one of my daughter playing in the busy street about 5 pm

I lived in Cebu city for a year near to mango. It was quiet there. I thought it would be here with a school a Uni  and a Hospital nearby but they don`t care about sick people in The hospital who need rest and certainly they don`t care about an English Kano.Where JP lives is Quiet and I know there other places near Dumaguete which much Quieter than here.Plus Dumaguete has many more things to do than here.I have enjoyed my time here but it seems to be getting worse and even with my stone ears it is just too much.Construction noise well bring it on (as long as it is temporary and not some builders yard where the noise will be forever) I was in construction for 35 years.I had sponge earplugs but they have been taken from me by force by force she is a strong 3 1/2 year old bully.
