I have a related question.  How do expats manage with DVD's from different regions (US is region 1) there in Philippines?  Do I bother bringing my DVD player from here when I move next month?

Many DVD BD players are multi regional out of the box. Some can be hacked others need to have an easy mod done, you could do it with few simple tools. It's all easy to find on interweb. Oppo is a good choice, not cheap well built amazing picture quality.

Some spinners have a switch on the back for other service voltages so look for that too.

Brought mine a few years ago, used it with no problems. It died and I bought a new one at SM appliance store. It plays my DVD's from the states no problem. It was only about 20 bucks. So if yours is old or weight and space is a problem I would leave it.

I brought my blu-ray player with me. It had a 250 Gb hard drive, and wireless internet connection.... 110 volt of course... it lasted less than a year and something fried it.   So I bought a PS3 and did not think about the region coding. It is region 3, most of my DVDs are region 1. Good for games but not movies.

I could buy a cheap DVD player as they generally do not have any bells & whistles so they play any disc.  Instead I just hook my laptop to the TV occasionally.  Mostly she gets the TV and I use my desktop PC with a 27" monitor.  The DVDs at the mall are all pirated so have no region coding. Only matters with what I brought from the US (about 250)

I bought an inexpensive AV system in the Philippines and it had no problem playing the DVD's I brought from the US.
