Rats!

I wrote about rats before:

http://www.philippines-expats.com/topic/21412-pest-shield-pro-review/page-3

I have only caught one measly rat with the sticky traps, and none with the cage traps.  I just read recently that the snap traps are the best but I don't have any.  This guy seems to know what he is talking about:

http://www.wildlife-removal.com/dead-rat.html

The rat problem got much worse while we were in New Zealand for 5 weeks.  They took over the house and had a big party.  Chewed up things and pooped all over everywhere.

Now I have a new problem.  A rat or another animal has died somewhere.  We only smell it when we turn the central air con on and only from the vents downstairs, so we are guessing that it is in one of the duct pipes.  That doesn't say much for the air worthiness of the duct pipes!

I have looked for it through the vents but I can only see to the first bend.  The drop ceiling area in the kitchen is the only access area to the downstairs air ducts and it is very tight.  It would be very hard to do anything in that area.  Today I am going to look inside the air handler unit of the central aircon, just in case a rat fell in there.  However, I can't smell anything in that area.

Luckily we are in the cool season and we did not turn on the air con the past 2 days due to the odor.  If you have the air con on for a while, the smell slowly dissipates but it is still bad.

I might hire an exterminator to take a look and maybe they would have a technique to find and remove it.

Any ideas?  Another part of the dilemma is that we are moving in April, so I am not going to put a lot of money into it.  The landlord would not do anything so I will not bother to ask.

"DOGS" !  In my Garden, 'Rats are called fair Game'  Nothing much Lives if it is a Pest (Neighbours have learned to bed their Chickens Down at Night) In fact the Keeping of Chickens is a Big Culprit of Rats, 4 Years now and never had a Rodent in the House.

Yes, just leave it alone.  A few times I have had rat infestations and found that the only effective method (for me) was poison.  Unfortunately they die in tight spaces and stink when they rot but it clears up the problem for a few months.

What I am getting at is that the smell will slowly disappear so that by the end or 2 weeks you will not even know there is a dead rat in the house.

On a side note, while dogs and cats will keep the problem in control much of the time, I tried dogs and cats AND a snake in the attic before resorting to poison.  There are rats in the Philippines that keep up in the trees, roofs and high places where the dogs and cats cannot get at them.  Those were the ones causing my infestations.

Actually I meant any ideas on finding the dead one!  I'll leave the live ones for the landlord.

We have a cat.  We put him inside only occasionally.  I put him in the store room for a few nights but he didn't get anything.  It probably doesn't help that we had his balls cut off.  Now he is interested in fashion, decorating, etc., but not so much rats.

There are rats around, no doubt about it. I've seen them here in Davao City in a hotel lobby, I seen one in a cage on a sidewalk that someone had caught.  .

I'm sure there are some around my neighbourhood. We do not have any pets but there are cats in the neighbourhood. I saw one in broad daylight  with a rat in his mouth.

We have not had a problem with rats or any sign of them. Usually, if some are present, you will see the black rat poop around.

I think the neighbourhood cats are keeping the rat population down.

I would probably buy a cat instead of poison or a rat trap.

Good Luck.

They make an endoscope for android phones, just a fiber optic cable with a camera and lights on the end. 6mm in diameter and I believe up to 25 feet long. The phone or tablet is the display. They have them also for laptops. They are cheap from Gearbest but you probably wouldn't be able to get it within 2 weeks? I thought of buying one just because they are a cool gadjet.

No but it could help finding the dead one which is what he asked in post #5.
