Election Time In The Philippines. What A Mess.

Wife and I have been following the presidential election campaign coverage here. I thought the presidential campaign coverage back home in the states was messed up but this is even crazier.

CNN Philippines, ( channel 10 ) has some of the Philippine campaign here in English. I wish the Debates and Town Hall Meetings here were in English. Wife just translates what she likes about it. She has her preference and is really biased. The one I like will probably be disqualified because they say she is not eligible.

There is no Primary election here. Just one and it's final. The population will be divided and the winner will be one of the 5 candidates. The other crazy part is that the VP is elected separate. So, he might be from a totally different party. That doesn't make sense to me.

Whoever wins will not affect me ( I hope ).

While I find it amusing here, I find the election campaign in the states boring.

It certainly is entertaining. Part of the "Bread and Circuses" thing, except the poor don't get much in the way of the "Bread". I don't expect the result, whatever it is, will change much.

We used to select the VP in the US separately too.  Way before my time, of course.

My wife likes Poe, but said Miriam Defensor is ok (for some reason she does not call her Santiago?) ....but I think that is because they are both from Iloilo, nothing political about it.  She is not very politically involved, and I think that is probably for the best. :tiphat:

If Duterte gets elected I think we can expect a slight drop in the overall population.  :hystery:

I think GMA had more commercial time than actual debate time if you noticed-and that annoying sound that warned them to stop talking was way to soon for any of them to get their point across. Most thought Poe was strongest from what I hear, but it remains to be seen if that has any impact come election time. I hope there's a peaceful process in the coming months-although I'm sure COMELEC will receive it's usual accusations of fixing and miscounting

Hi Steve, Yes, way too much time given to commercials. My wife doesn't complain but maybe because she is used to it. The only time I watch anything about the Philippines is on Channel 10 CNN Philippines. It's in English, most of the time. Yeah, but even there, way too many commercials. I just click the remote to MUTE.

I have no idea of what is happening there politically.  But it seems to me that the US can claim the blame for the way the elections are conducted there.  They probably had much to do with it.

I recently tried to get my head around the candidate election process in US for the Presidency.  I just did not understand it.

Give me the good old Westminster system anyday.  It might have faults but a lot more understandable.

I wonder if he is Donald Trumps illegitimate older brother.

My first Philippine election season I was on Mindoro. It made me nostalgic, you see, I used to teach basic rifle marksmanship.

Common folk look forward to election season. They call it home improvement and new wardrobe season. Free t shirts for all, and all the banners are prized building material in the squatter areas
