OnMyWay Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I went down to the Subic Bay airport today to see what was going on with the military exercises. Not too much but there were two Osprey aircraft idling by, so I hung out until they took off. Very cool aircraft and I had never seen one up close. Here is a video I made and a lot of it was shot through the chain link fence, so not too great. https://goo.gl/photos/JNmWqHWo2M6LWiJv5

I thought they might be VTOL but they took off like regular planes.

It might use less fuel to take off on the runway? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Boeing_V-22_Osprey
not so old china hand Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 (edited) 1 hour ago, OnMyWay said: I thought they might take off vertically but they did not. It must depend on where they are. It might use less fuel to take off on the runway? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Boeing_V-22_Osprey It would almost certainly reduce the fuel burn to take off conventionally. With a vertical takeoff the engines are fighting gravity with no lift from the planes' forward motion. AFAICR the Harrier jump-jet used around half its fuel load if it took off vertically. Hence the "ski jumps" on RN "through-deck cruisers" to allow the jet to build up speed and conserve fuel. OnMyWay Posted April 4, 2016 Author Posted April 4, 2016 They are very busy tonight. It seems like I hear them going by every 30-60 minutes. There must be several.
