Jollygoodfellow Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 One expat's view on Dumaguete. Do you agree? Dumaguete, in Negros Oriental, Philippines, has been touted as an ideal retirement city for expats. Just how good is it? Here are 5 good reasons to retire in Dumaguete City. We shall examine the pros and cons of each segment from the point of view of someone already retired and living in Dumaguete. COST OF LIVING The most important decision a retiree will make is to decide if he or she can afford the cost of living in their chosen destination. Decide what your budget is and then start looking for places you can afford to live on that budget. Dumaguete will be near the top of your list. Popular Post manofthecoldland Posted April 14, 2016 Popular Post Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) Interesting article.... for those who are unfamiliar with retirement in the PI. It will undoubtedly popularize the place even more, since that seems to be the point of the article. I like articles like this, extolling the benefits of retiring in MNL, Cebu and Dumaguete, Subic , PG, Boracay and Angeles. I sort of think of them like.... oil and transmission pan magnets working for those of us living in other, less familiar or popular places. I obviously like ex-pats, since I'm on this site, but like many others on this site.... I'm not fond of heavy concentration points, since it often creates a set of new problems for ex-pats, along with some positive opportunities. AZ, FL, Spain & Portugal, Thailand etc., are great for many, but not my cup of tea... which is why I like it here. I like taking my ex-pat dosages like I take my vitamins.... in small, regular amounts when I feel the need or desire in order to maintain my health. In this case, its my mental health. Just My Personal Opinion. Edited April 14, 2016 by manofthecoldland mispelling & repetition
Sander Martin Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) Avarage of 2500usd per month budget? How meny retired people really live on a budget like that? From reading alot of forums the avarage budget has seemed to be 1000usd +-300usd. Im not retired and have not lived in Duma, but i have visited. I think its a nice small city for retirement. Nice bulevard, alot of other expats, but still nice and quiet. Because of the ammount of expats it seems that you can get most the goods you want. Its hard in other similar sized quiet citys (like Iloilo where i am now). Edited April 14, 2016 by Sander Martin
robert k Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 I think about half of these Dumaguete articles were cribbed from reading a few other articles who may not have been written by anyone who had been there. I think that may be the reason this writer threw out a sea anchor saying inflation could double the cost of living there. Most of these articles leave out the rudimentary healthcare which is the most important criteria for some. Hopefully that will change in the future but it has not yet.

Popular Post sonjack2847 Posted April 15, 2016 Popular Post Posted April 15, 2016 I think anybody who came here on a 2500 budget and had no ties may soon get fed up with the bad infrastructure.

I found the about the author extremely enlightening in that it contained 0 content. From the article itself, I would debate the median income of expats in Dumaguete being $2,500 USD. When I looked at the article just now, it had 129 views so I don't think it will influence a great many people one way or the other.
