Mr. Bobo Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 As an animal lover, I have five dogs, this situation really ticks me off. There is a dog two houses over (about 10 meters) that barks for hours on end. This dog is not barking because of separation anxiety like some dogs do. Dogs with separation anxiety will start to bark when their owner leaves the house and will usually bark until the owner returns. This dog is barking because he is hungry and he will continue to bark, sometimes for hours on end, until he is fed. I saw the owner bring him some food one day after the dog had been barking for over an hour and he immediately stopped barking so I know the reason he is barking is because he is hungry. I love to walk in the morning so I walk for an hour around the basketball court in my backyard. I have to walk around the basketball court because walking in the street would be suicide as I live on a very busy road. Sometimes, five minutes into the start of my one hour walk, the dog will start barking and that means I have to listen to him for 55 minutes and it really makes my blood boil for two reasons. Reason number one is the barking is very loud and annoying and reason number two, I feel sorry for the dog who has nothing to eat. I have sent my housemaid over several times to tell them to feed the animal and sometime it actually works for a couple of days but sure enough after a couple of days they will start to neglect to feed the dog again and the barking continues. I am at my wits end on this one. Maybe they are not feeding the dog because they have no food to give him. My feelings on that one is if you cannot afford to feed a dog then don't buy a dog. Any thoughts on how to handle the situation?

Any thoughts on how to handle the situation? As a foreigner here there is no good way to handle it that won't cause you serious problems - legal as well as personal with the owner. Here in the Philippines human life is worth little to next to nothing. What can you expect with the treatment of animals when human life means nothing? You basically have 3 choices. Ignore it, feed the dog yourself, feed it a "last meal" to put it out of your misery and the dog's, or move. I love animals more than most people. But there have been times I've had to eliminate an animal (dog) due to the barking that the owner(s) would not control. Simply no other choice and you'll find the problem is everywhere and not confined just to where you are living. Like most everything else here, it's just the way it is and it will not change. I had a similar situation. Guy kept a dog chained up along the road (almost a public area). Half the day he was in the direct sun, and would almost strangle himself on his leash trying to get out of the sun. Rarely fed and watered. If he was brought in it was at night. Since I could get to him with out trespassing etc. I started out by pushing a dish of water to him (little bugger was so thirsty was afraid I might get bit). I would walk by 2-3 times a day and fill it up. Later on I did the same with some dry cat food (we have cats). He didn't care it was cat food, gobble, gobble. I did this for a couple of weeks, I know the word got around that the Crazy White Guy was feeding and watering the dog (he was always glad to see me). After a few weeks the dog disappeared. I don't know if the guy was shamed by his neighbors to move the dog inside, or if he killed it or what ever. But I would bet a large sum of money the reason the dog is not there anymore is because the guy was shamed into doing something about it.

I'll bet my bottom dollar you were only fattening up the main course of a meal they ate at a drinking party. Bet that they got a laugh out of it too..... Bet that they got a laugh out of it too..... I live in a fairly large city Aritao (population 40,000) in Nueva Vizcaya. My wife is an ex-municipal councillor ( 2007-2010). She ran in the recent May 9 election and was elected as one of the eight municipal councilors in our city. Her term starts July 1st. So I think that there may be some legal recourse with her being a municipal councillor, or at least she may have some influence in resolving the problem. As to feeding the dog myself I did consider that but ruled that option out quickly. Why should I feed my neighbor's dog? I can understand the actions that you have taken in the past to eliminate the problem, but I would have difficulty killing a dog.

Sander Martin Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Spoiler Dont open the spoiler if you don't want to see something disgusting. Its one of the "skeleton dogs" running around our neighborhood... He has owners. I feel sorry for the little bugger, but im not sure how i can help him... Scoop them out with a spoon? Most Filipinos dont care about their pets. They take them and forget them. Fiances sister is kinda the same. Shes so excited to take an animal and then doesn't take care of it. We have a 3-4month old dog that sh%ts and pees where he wants. They look at me like a public enemy when i pick up the dog, put the dogs nose in the sh&t and take him outside. Mom and fiance feed the dog most of the time. We demanded her to get tick treatment for the dog and she complained how expensive it is. Dont ?????? take an animal if you cant afford to take care of it. Edited May 20, 2016 by Sander Martin

We have 3 dogs and they are fed twice a day on chicken liver and rice with the odd treat during the day, the only time our dogs bark is when someone rings the door bell or if any of us have been out shopping etc when we come back they go mad. Dogs are a problem out on the road there are often 3-4 dogs roaming around and this is the same all around the area. we have the odd visit from the dog catcher ( rarely ) but the owners with " Connections " are pre-warned and they keep their dogs inside until the catcher has gone ! mogo51 Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Here in Thailand, the King is a dog lover which is fine and he can afford as many dogs as he wants. But once he decrred that all Thai people should have dogs as they are special animals - fine. So everyone now has a dog, but it is left to roam the streets, sh.t where it likes and cause havoc. Many people get bitten, nothing happens. Dogs are full of mange, nothing happens. Dogs bark and yelp all night (I suspect for the reason they are hungry or fighting for tidbits). Agree with Sander and I love dogs (only small ones), if you can't care for them, don't have them.
Tukaram (Tim) Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 Almost every house around here has what seem like stray dogs... they are "pets" but don't get taken care of or fed. They roam around on their own, but people claim them as theirs... Also, many of the houses have the one dog on a 3 foot chain. I asked it the dog was a yard alarm... or veal... I got funny looks with that question. I don't like it, but I know I can't change it. So you learn to ignore it, or let it drive you crazy - your choice.
