Onemore52 Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Does anyone know the correct spacing for the planting of coconut trees? I am thinking of planting the trees on the boundary of the block that has been cleared, and having a thought of just one single row of trees on 60m of land. To get the most of the land is it possible to plant banana trees in the space between the coconuts? Cheers
MikeSwede Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Here is a page where you get some answers. On the plantations I think I measured 10 steps between plants which translate to roughly 8 meters. http://srinidhifarm.com/tips_coconut.php

Of course you would have quite a bit of time before you had coconuts.
Queenie O. Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I asked my Filipino husband, and he said maybe about every ten feet? I guess you could plant banana trees in between too. You do have to be careful about falling coconuts though, as Robert said as one dropping on your head could kill you! You might want to consider consider maybe the dwarf coconuts that we have in our yard. They can yield some good sized coconuts fairly quickly, and are still a decent sized tree. We have both and every so often we have a neighbor climb the big coconut palms to knock down the coconuts for safety moving around the yard. Here and there some of my smaller shrubs got "torpedoed" by the hacked coconuts, but not too bad. It takes a big coco palm quite a while to bear fruit anyway, so not necessary too often. I recently made a coconut cream pie from some coconuts from the dwarf trees:)
virginprune Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 The plot I'm building on is in a corner of two hectares that are mostly coconut. The guy has planted banana in between but my SO says that they are not a good mix together. A good thing to plant with coconut is pineapple, which has a first crop after 18 months, opposed to 5 years for coconut but then coconut is very regular after that, whereas pineapple has 3 crops over a two and a half year period then needs replanting. This info was passed to me by a foreman at Dole.
