Hi Everyone!

I'm a new guy here. I'm an American residing in the Philippines (17 years) and go by the handle jfrsmth. I'm conducting a study as part of a PhD Language Studies qualitative research paper on the Taxonomy of Intercultural Communication, with De La Salle University. I am simply trying to gather Westerner thoughts as to your experiences interacting with the Filipino people in the Philippines. I would be interested to read your comments regarding your interactions with Filipino people in the Philippines and what if any, positive or negative comments or observations you can make about the interactions. Please however, no long drawn out stories, but rather simplified comments as to what the situation was and how your experience interacting with Filipinos in the Philippines may have been in-line with, or in conflict with, what you consider to be an ideal interaction from your point of view. Please feel free to share your opinions as well regarding how or why you consider this situation ideal or not. I would also be interested to know how this and or other experiences have shaped your perception of the culture of the Philippines. Screen names only will be utilized for data gathering purposes. This is your opportunity to share your opinions and thoughts with a greater audience and add to the ever-growing body of knowledge in the specific area of intercultural communication and the behavioral sciences in general. Your help and cooperation is very much welcome.

Kind regards, and thanks in advance.

I understand. My meaning: "Screen names only will be utilized for data gathering purposes" was to help me keep the data organized. However, I failed to be specific that no names would appear in the paper. My apologies for not being clear about that.

Unusual, rather than offensive.  After all the years you have lived here you must have met some other unusual expats so you must understand we (people like me anyway) prefer to get to know a person through frequent posts.

Not living there yet, but 8 years in Thailand has made me reasonably street wise here.  After 17 years.  you should know all the pitfalls and crests of life in Philippines.  Especially a man of your education, we are but mere plebs, but mostly very street wise.

I appreciate the responses. Again, I have requested that the moderator remove this thread topic since it appears to have been received with some negativity, which was never my intent for posting. However, since it is still up, please allow me the chance to reply to some comments. The spirit of inquiry led me to this research idea meant to discover whether there is a connection between the dimensions of intercultural communication and what we as foreigners encounter here in the Philippines. It is an exciting subject relating to why people from different cultures may not always see things the same way. The research relies upon feedback from others (exclusive of myself) in order to paint a broader, more vivid picture as it relates specifically here in the Philippines, that can add to the body of knowledge regarding such a taxonomy. In fairness, and as per proper ethical considerations I identified myself and my purpose to keep everything clear. However, as our moderator mentioned, of course no one need respond if they are uncomfortable in so doing. That goes without saying. There is certainly no hidden agenda or other underlying plan for this thread other than gathering data for such an endeavor. Your responses would have been used in data gathering to help keep things organized but no usernames would have been used in the end result. Again, my sincere apologies if something I posted came across as improper or unpleasant. If anyone is amenable, I am still very much interested in knowing your experiences as stated in my OP. -With respect and kind regards.
